Re: Calling all NYU Fall '09 applicants! [#permalink]
Stern is semi-rolling in that they'll give you an initial notification deadline but they'll review the applicants in the order received so if you submit it earlier, you should get feedback before the deadline. Of course there are outliers on both ends.

FYI if you are submitting a transcript under your maiden name you need to notify them otherwise they'll toss it and you'll move to the back of the pile...and they won't tell you this until about 2 months after you submit it.

Great tips! Thanks for sharing this.

If any of you are just starting your essays, buy Paul Bodines' "Great Application Essays for Business Schools." I picked this book up when I was waitlisted and figured I'd start on my reapp and although I didn't get to use it, I think it is great and am keeping it as a reference for my scholarship essays I'll need to write again. This is perfect for Q1.

As for the second essay, I feel that you'll need to tie them together somehow. What is your experience and what have you learned means you need to be reflective about your interactions with the community. Here are some hints about what I took out of orientation about what makes Stern different (by what they stressed to us in orientation)
*Stern stresses that it is different from other business schools because people are coolaborative and not cut-throat, especially in recruiting.
*Stern stresses understanding and accepting different cultures/personalities and being culturally sensitive. This can be seen by the 40% women compared to most schools that have 30%. Stern also has the typical 30% interntaional + ??%US minorities.
*Stern facilitates a close-knit community hence the amount of effort they have put into orientation, the SWAP network (stern network to access alumni), and upgrades to facilities to allow space for group work (if you have never been to NYC, you won't understand how great the facilities are!!!)

So the second part is constructive criticism. I don't know but being able to turn a negative into a positive which shows your experience in one of the Stern differentiators would sounds pretty good to me if I was reading it. And it would tie your two questions together in. Anyway, I think the second part needs to be very short on the description and tons on the what you learn + how that'll make Stern strong or make you a better fit.

Good luck all!!!

Man! first Fuqua, now Stern. What's up with schools asking what other schools I'm applying to right on the application?

Don't think so. I really want to crash Beer Blast one Thursday night before I turn in my application, too.

From what I can gather, an interview invite is a huge thing and most people interviewed end up getting offers. True?

I think this is a bit of a misconception. It is true that a larger than normal percentage of interviewees get accepted than other schools (less people to interview). But, I think the number is somewhere between 60 and 70%. So, congrats if you get an interview, but it hardly means you're in.

I suppose be attending the info session tonight in Boston. However, I got food poisoning during lunch, start having diarrhea close to the evening. I decided to skip the session, since I don't want to run to bath room every 10 minutes and distract everyone. Since I registered for the event, should I let them know what happened? Would it have bad effect on my app? :( eh.... I did do a campus visit back in April, and plan to visit again in October. Now, I'm paranoid

Wouldn't worry about it. If you're registering during visits, you're fine. School visits count more than info session visits IMO.

I am probably not the best person for that, but please do drop me a message when you are coming in for Information sessions, tours, or any of that part of the applications. My schedule is looking really busy, so my reliability to be at Beer Blast is uncertain but otherwise I am pretty certain to be about. Outwith classes, I will do my very best to be available and help out.

Should I bother mentioning that I did a class visit last year? I plan on doing one this year as well. I think I wasn't quite ripe enough for bschool last year.

Do you guys think this whole thing is worth mentioning or just go with this year's visit?

Did you actually end up applying? Drop me a line and I will give you my 2cents. I think that mentioning it puts you towards validating why you feel more ready now than you did. Those essays are short. Maybe you can make it part of your constructive feedback for the second essay if it fits that situation?

I'm in a similar situation. I attended multiple events last year in hopes of applying. But my GMAT score sucked and I didn't feel comfortable applying. So I studied and increased my score to a point where I feel comfortable applying. But now I don't know if I should be attending events this year again. I don't think there is really much more I can learn from attending Discover Stern again and doing another class visit, but I afraid they may look at the fact that I haven't interacted with the school that much this year as a negative.

For the 5pm class, do we have to stay for the whole 3+ hours?

That sounds like it's a Langone program class, no? Weird timing.

I don't think so. From my recollection, first years take 4 classes that meet twice a week and one class that meets ONCE a week. That once a week-er is 3+ hours long.
