As far as I remember, HBS discourages peer recommendation. I think I read it in one of Dee's blog posts... or maybe it was in one of the HBS podcasts...

I think HBS does discourage it (as garbus said), but I know of two classmates who got in with a peer rec. So, while it's not recommended, if you think your peer is going to add a new perspective + you can't find a decent alternative third recommendation, then you should get that peer to write you a rec.

Our class profile has been posted: https://www.hbs.edu/mba/profiles/classprofile.html

Doesn't look too different from past years except we have 942 students in our class. Apps were up about 5% so acceptance rate stayed the same at 12%. 47% of class is within 3 years of college graduation (40% last year). We have the most international class though... 36% vs. 33% of past years.

funny that yields are slightly lower at stanford and HBS as compared to the past, i think more people may have actually went with the school giving the the most money versus simply going to the best brand

wow, i wonder what fantastic story the 490 admit had

Would this mean - there is no way to hide your MBA plans from your manager? I don't want him write my recos, and HBS discourages peers. So, can you please advice, from whom I can get recos? HBS requires 3 recos. I have - 1 from outside work, for the remaining, I can only think of peers/higher managers.

Thanks.

If you really don't want to involve your manager, I'd go with 1 peer (as msday pointed out - it can still work well). It leaves you with 1 ? - some other manager? work colleague? client?

Re: Calling all HBS Fall 2010 Candidates [#permalink]
So I'm checking the Class of 2011 profiles from the link above and can't believe my eyes:

Admits Within 3 Years of College Graduation** 441

** Includes class years 2006-2009:
2009 - 1
2008 - 15
2007 - 131
2006 - 294

Does this mean HBS only took ONE applicant with 3 years of work experience this year? I find that hard to believe given that HBS tends to love younger applicants... what do you guys think?

No. It means that they accepted 1 guy that graduated college in 2009 (this year), 15 guys that graduated college in 2008 (last year), and so forth.

if you add up all the numbers 1,15,131,294, then they add up to 441. Meaning, in 2009, they accepted 441 students that graduated within the last 3 years. make sense?

Actually, these are accepted and matriculating applicants. So HBS could have taken more than 1 college grad but required them to defer (possibly to make room for the extra 42?). I seriously doubt they only accepted 1 when past years its been more like 16 with half deferring.

I don't think there's any advantage to submitting before the deadline. I remember reading either on their website or in a chat that they don't start reviewing applications until the deadline anyway, and applications are read in a random order.
