If it is for the money, MBA -> IB/MC path. Furthermore, the opportunity cost is higher for attaining a PhD compared to that for MBA. And you see the money rolling in slower for the PhD (5 years vs. 2 years for MBA).

what is IB MC path?

It can't hurt, and will likely help. It obviously depends on the perceived quality of the journal it was published in, whether you're the corresponding author or wrote it alone, with 1 coauthor, or with 5 coauthors..

I have heard that getting a MBA is moreso for people who want to work in the industry and getting a PhD is for people who want to get into academia. Is that the general case?

Also, I have had some tell me that you either go straight into the PhD program, and don't bother with the MBA first. Is that the best way to go... or is it common for people to get an MBA and then years later, work on a PhD?

Thanks

Exactly. People in the US/west evaluate everything with money but in the east (basically in South Asia) the same is not the case. People in the east value the degree with knowledge and education.

:? I live in India, and from my experience, out here you cannot afford to do anything for the love of it - if you are not ready to take a really "substantial" risk in terms of the life you expect. There so little in teaching that promotes real education (as againt knowing the facts). Actually, very few in engineering know what is what (understanding concepts - entropy I know many dont know and why it has to increase). All you have to do is get the answers right in an exam. Thats not a simple task, its very hard, the questions are really confusing for their mathematical complexity, but that is not pursuit of knowledge either

I agree with Boatmeadow, however if you are a quant geek its best to make use of the opportunity.
