Calling All Fall 2010 MIT Sloan Applicants

Not sure if I can post this question here, but anybody visiting Sloan on Wed, Sep 30th? I'll be there for the Ambassadors Program that day. Just curious if anyone else will be there.

hey guys i did the ambassadors program this week and i wanted to share my opinion. let's remember, this is solely an opinion and an extremely small sample at that. my impression was that it was extremely nerdy and consisted of a high population of asians (those are separate ideas, not trying to infer that asians are nerdy). i asked my ambassador what differentiated sloan and his response was that people at other schools like to party and that wasn't the case at sloan. i also asked him if he enjoyed exploring boston and he said "no, there's nothing to do in boston and everything is so old." this was probably a bad person to have as an ambassador.

the feeling i got from the students was that it's academically rigorous and very quantitatively oriented and there is not as much focus on soft skills. however, the class i visited was a core first year class and extremely basic. everything was covered in an undergrad business 101 class. although, i suppose that's what core classes are all about. i also got the feeling that if i was interested in entrepreneurship in an industry other than technology, the program may not be right for me. when i think about what the T stands for in MIT, this is no surprise.

sorry to rag on sloan, there are some really cool things about the program like GLAB, the innovation period, 100K competition, etc. don't let one person's opinion ruin it for you - i urge all of you to visit before blindly applying.

You had an ambassador tell you that??? That is totally off base. Do you remember his/her name? I don't know what hole he/she lives in but if you live over in Beacon Hill a whole different story.

Well to be very honest I don't think you need an ambassador to tell you that MIT is NOT a party school or a fun school. If you want a party school, go to Kellogg(no offense to partying or Kellogg), but Kellogg throws the best parties, as friends have told me.
MIT of course is very rigorous academically, and the fact that they allot TA's and RA's(Teaching asst and research asst, to the laymen:) proves that they approach the business school system different from pretty much any B-school out there.
The Asian thing...again...no surprise...a school which places a lot of emphasis on Math and Finance skills...who do you think would be there?
I've heard from many Sloan alums..that Sloan is NOT the place for everyone...it is very unique and very academic. You should have that bent of mind to go there and you'll like it. Else you will regret it.
I do disagree with his portrayal of Boston..it is the most exciting city in the US if you ask me...plenty to do, close to almost every major east coast city and Montreal....I love the crowd there...definitely a notch above the rest of the US..maybe that's why they get dissed by everyone.

What to say about his comments on Boston ? Wonder how perspectives can differ. I found Boston to be one of the most liveliest cities to live. There's so much to explore in Boston and of course some parts of the city are very old, no doubt. "There's nothing to do in Boston" is a completely baseless statement, IMHO.

So does it make sense to quote a couple of examples or even 3 .. I'm finding it really hard to come up with just one example that I can stretch for 500 words.

Yes two examples are fine in the same essay if you are able to support the same idea. In a stylistic sense, I wouldn't want the examples to deviate significantly so to dilute your point.

Seriously, are you confusing med school with business school? No business school is that academically rigorous. It is an exercise in time management. I recommend if you visit to come to a Sloan C-function (consumption function), free food and beer.

I went last week and asked the Ambassador about life in Boston. He responded it sucks the bars close at 2am. Sounds like a NYC POV to me.

I got the impression that they all wanted to be entrepreneurs. But that is from the selection I spoke to.

Just submitted my application for R1. Still waiting on a recommender to submit his recommendation, though. It'll be complete as soon as that happens.

Wow that's quick man..I'm not even started on the application...doin LBS and Tuck, and losin sleep over them. Then comes Kellogg and then Sloan..Phew !!!

Nah, it's not quick. It took me 3 months to do Harvard and MIT. I just started early. It'll be Kellogg, Ross, and Wharton next.

I will be visiting on the 26th for the LGO ambassador day...I will report back (about someone mentioning the nerdiness and big number of Asians)

oh wait, I am Asian but I am not nerdy (I wish I am) lol

MIT/LGO = My #1 school (as I mentioned in a previous post, my chances of getting in is slim to none but applying anyway)

I visited Sloan/MIT this past week and participated in the Ambassadors program, etc. Honestly, my only objective for the visit was to determine if the school was (for lack of a better term) too "engineer-leaning" for me. Despite an initial walk around campus where the nerd-level was quite high (I was a little bit worried), once I was actually in the main Sloan buildings, the mix of students seemed the same as at any other b-school that I've visited. This extended to the lunch chats with current students, and my class visit (Marketing Mgmt with Mark Ritson - awesome professor). I think if you compare the admission stats, you'll see that Sloan has maybe 40%+ engineers whereas other top schools are around 30-35%, so take that however you will. I don't pretend to know the whole program after only one visit, but I think for me Sloan is definitely in the running.

Now ... to start the application and cross my fingers ...

Speaking to the last post, if you come to an Ambassador visit on a Monday or Wednesday definitely go to Marketing Management with Ritson. It is a great class both in terms of knowledge and entertainment.
