C, D, E seem wrong.

IMO B.

i am thinking "had been an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days" and "sporadically erupted " should be in past tense because, last clause talk of present tense "they now know"

What's the OA hogann ?

Agreed, [A]. Need the "ing" form of the verb to modify the entire preceding clause.

OA is A

Tense remains the same and sporadically erupting correctly modifies "an underground remnant.."
