Re: Once a trade secret is disclosed, its value is gone so it is essential [#permalink]
its means "it is" and it`s is a possessive form

Once a trade secret is disclosed. its value is gone so it is essential to maintain proper safeguards within your business and require all employees to sign carefully drafted nondisclosure agreements

i think it`s is required here.

so will choose C

IMO A....
its doesn't mean "it is" but it`s does....
it's is a contraction for "it is" or "it has"......

OA:

The sentence has parallel structure between the verbs maintain and require.
B & D has parallelism errors.
C incorrectly uses it's
E changes the meaning by using adverb "essentially" rather than adjective "essential"

+1 for A. Parrallelism.

So, it's essental to + verb is also acceptable even though it sounds more like subjunctive?

Fell for B, didn't notice the apostrophe. Ok folks. If C didn't have that apostrophe, which one would have been better? A or C?

B failed parallelism. To maintain || to sign

Second B has SV error. employees is plural - should use "require" than "requires"

Once a trade secret is disclosed. its value is gone so it is essential to maintain proper safeguards within your business and require all employees to sign carefully drafted nondisclosure agreements

A.its value is gone so it is essential to maintain proper safeguards within your business and require all employees to sign ==> Correct
B.its value is gone so it is essential to maintain proper safeguards within your business and requires that all employees to sign ==> "requires" must be replaced with "require". Also "to sign" must be replaced with "sign" since "requires that all employees to sign" is subjunctive.
C.it`s value is gone so it is essential to maintain proper safeguards within your business and requires that all employees to sign ==> Incorrect use of "it's" since it means "it is"
D.its value is gone so it is essential that you maintain proper safeguards within your business and requires that all employees to sign ==> Same as B
E.its value is gone so essentially you maintain proper safeguards within your business and require that all employees to sign ==> "to sign" must be replaced with "sign" since "requires that all employees to sign" is subjunctive.

There one should hesitate between A and C and A is correct because "require" is the world needed

A.its value is gone so it is essential to maintain proper safeguards within your business and require all employees to sign
B.its value is gone so it is essential to maintain proper safeguards within your business and requires that all employees to sign -> parallelism error (should be 'to maintain...and...require...')
C.it`s value is gone so it is essential to maintain proper safeguards within your business and requires that all employees to sign -> it's = it is. WRONG.
D.its value is gone so it is essential that you maintain proper safeguards within your business and requires that all employees to sign -> parallelism error (should be 'to maintain...and...require...')
E.its value is gone so essentially you maintain proper safeguards within your business and require that all employees to sign -> meaning of statement is completely distorted from original.

Before we go into solving it, are not the text and all its choices flouting style by running on without proper conjugation between two independent clauses?

Once a trade secret is disclosed, its value is gone’ is the first independent clause; ‘so it is essential bla bla’ is the second independent clause using 'so' in the sense of ‘therefore’. But the conjugation is not even by a comma. The proper conjugation will be a semi - colon in such cases IMO.

May be the argument is that since the error is there in all the choices, we should ignore it.

Is there any such previous instance as this in GMAT?

IMO ,A is also wrong because the word "require" has to be used with subjunctive mood ,

its value is gone so it is essential to maintain proper safeguards within your business and require that all employees sign

I think this should be the correct usage!!!

The answer must be A.
Its is the possessive form for it .It's is not the right usage .
That is omitted in order to maintain the parallelism in the sentence .The verb essential elsewhere in the sentence does not have subjunctive !!

I agree with Shikhar. If I go with MGMAT SC book Chapter 7, page 114, it says that Subjunctive construction is as follows:
Bossy Verb+That+subject+command subjunctive.
require+That+all employees+sign

Here A looks okay if we make this change to the sentence.
