Just got dinged by Chicago, which is giving me some inspiration to really polish off my NYU app this weekend...

Are people filling the Work History form in the Pdf ? Or creating a separate Word document?

Plus on the activities and achievement page, is there a commonly accepted format to enter it. I just created my own month, year, activity format for Chicago, but that app hasn't gone so well, hence the niggling doubt.

Is anyone doing the optional essay to add additional things you left out of other essays (opposed to just explaining a poor gmat/gpa or not having current manager as LOR, etc)?

And if so, should this essay typically be shorter than other ones since its an extra? I'm hovering around 600 words right now, and I'm not sure if that's overkill for an optional essay.

That's even over than the word limit for the required essays! Definitely a bit too much. Unless you simply must, my suggestion would be to keep the optional essay at less than 250 words at most.

There's an excel template available on the Applications page. I was going to use that, it seems to be the most straight forward way.

Same here only I was doing it in word.

I just realized that if you are doing a Portfolio on PPT for your essay 3 you cant submit it online anyway (unless of course you somehow get it under 500KB). Looks like I am going to have to print and mail out my Essay 3 portfolio. Are there any other international applicants on this forum? I want to know what level of detail the International student supplement needs to be.

I think the international supplement is mainly important if you're already in the US. I'm not, so it took two seconds to check the right boxes.

Re: Calling all NYU Fall 2010 applicants [#permalink]
For the Work History spreadsheet, is anyone using a new row for new positions? I'd like to put my previous titles to indicate my promotions and their dates, and this seems like the best place to do it, but it doesn't really seem like they mean to have different positions within the same company on separate rows. I've only had 1 employer since I graduated from undergrad.

Swank,

I think the website says specifically to highlight additional responsibilities/changes in job roles. I think you should mention it in different rows. Maybe you can even use the reason for leaving box to explain why you were given the additional responsibilities/new roles. I remember from my school visit that the student ambassadors said they look to this form for a lot more detail.

Re: Calling all NYU Fall 2010 applicants [#permalink]
The impression that I got was that the Work History form does not need to list any accomplishments/achievements. It says specifically on the instructions to follow the format provided, and there isn't a section for achievements. In the admission tips section of the instructions page it says:

"# Emphasize your accomplishments and contributions. Do not just list your job responsibilities.
# Highlight your career progression at an organization by showing changes to your title or responsibilities."

But I think these are tips for presenting your resume, not your Work History Form.

I can't remember if it was mentioned at the Info Session I attended. Anyone else have thoughts?

Re: Calling all NYU Fall 2010 applicants [#permalink]
To be fair, my school visit was over a year ago, so what I am going on is the notes I made. I did remember they specifcally said they focus on leaving a position in that form. bball has a point on the fact that there is no room to mention accomplishments if you follow the template given on the Stern page. I'm looking for clarity on this as well I guess.

Re: Calling all NYU Fall 2010 applicants [#permalink]
I am going in the same direction as bball. I've basically listed a row for each of my titles, along with the dates and salary info. I agree with bball - I think the instructions about listing your achievements are meant for your resume, and I've re-tooled my resume slightly to reflect that.

I do have a strange salary pattern, which I am going to use a short paragraph in Essay 4 to explain. I really don't think they are looking for any further details in the Work History form itself, given how explicit the template is.
