i've mentioned this in other threads, but i thought it would be more relevant here. this tip is for verbal (for everyone, but especially non-native english speakers): reading daily will definitely help your verbal score. in addition to some of the sources i mentioned earlier (CNN, ny times, wall street journal), a good source for daily reading is the HBS News twitter feed (https://twitter.com/hbsnews). every day, it is updated with links to various news articles related in some way to the business world. i started reading it relatively late in the game, but for someone who still has months (or maybe even a year) until their gmat, i'd recommend reading through the various articles every day to improve your verbal skills.

also, there seems to be much contention in the LSAT LR Bible vs GMAT CR Bible debate. i think if you are already scoring in the high 30s/low 40s, you should definitely go through the entire LSAT book if you have time. it will help to put you over the top, at least for CR. if you are scoring low to start off with, or if you are a non-native speaker, then concentrate on reading news articles and also maybe the GMAT CR bible instead.

Shadowsjc,

I would NOT negate what you said w.r.t. Verbal tips. You are the GMAT Verbal Guru and your score proves that.....But here is my concern w.r.t to GMAT Powerscore Bible. I do understand what the book is saying and also helped me apply those strategies for the questions in book. But when I come to OG questions, somehow I am not able to apply those strategies in order to come up withe correct ans.

I don't know what is missing with my preparation. Completely blank on that.

If I compare the similar strategy w.r.t to MGMAT SC and OG questions, I can 100% apply what ever rules mentioned in the MGMAT book against the OG questions and easily figure why an ans is wrong and why an ans is correct.

For others who are reading this note,

As many suggest, Reading is the "best way" to improve in Verbal. But when one(Non-native speaker) decides that he / she wants to take GMAT, then I don't know how much of reading will really help him / her in a matter of 2 - 3 months. But I do agree that going thru OG questions and their explanations definitely helps. Atleast it helped in my case. :)

Great score! You rocked it! :-D

Are you really looking into doing Healthcare admin? Isn't that a bit of a deviation from your engineering background?

Congrats again!

i don't necessarily mean healthcare as in being the head of a hospital or anything like that... more along the lines of all the other industries that fall under the healthcare umbrella (pharma, medical devices, biotech, etc.); i'd like to work in one of those industries, focusing on operations and manufacturing, and hopefully move up along the ranks of management (i can dream, right?)

shadowsjc, how did you do on the Manhattan gmat CAT Quant sections? and how did it compare to your gmat prep and actual gmat scores?

MGMAT #1 (6 days before test): Q45
MGMAT #2: (5 days before test): Q42
MGMAT #3: (1 day before test): Q44

GMAT Preptest: unfortunately I don't think I wrote down my breakdown anywhere for these... or if I did, I can't find it

Actual GMAT: Q48

Not sure why I did so poorly on the 2nd MGMAT test (I think that was an outlier, as I got a 660 overall). I feel that the quant on the MGMAT was noticeably tougher in the sense that the problems were more involved and took longer to solve than on the actual GMAT.

Thanks for the response. Your MGMAT quant scores are very similar to mine. How did you feel about the GMAT verbal compared to the actual test? (Mainly the CR and RC- were they more or less complex compared to the MGMAT?) I noticed your ridiculous verbal score on the actual exam. Congrats!

to be honest, everything on the verbal just 'clicked' for me on test day. the RC's made sense to me; the CR's were a little tricky, but about on par with the MGMAT tests. i was used to rushing through the section (from my practice tests), so on test day i took my time on a lot of the trickier CR and SC problems. by the time i got to the end of the verbal section, i was taking about 4 mins per problem, but it was worth it in the end for me.

obviously taking 4 mins per problem from the early stages of the section will result in almost certain failure. if you can pace yourself properly, you should be fine taking a little longer on 'harder' questions, and less time on the easier ones.

Thanks for your response. I can definitely see by your score that everything clicked for you that day. Unfortunately I am still in the mid 30's range on the MGMAT tests. I think i have gotten worse in SC, so i need to review the basics again in the MGMAT SC book.

Very impressive score, grats!

Strange though that you have 1q and 2v above me, yet only 10 points more. You deserve a 780!

Hi,

Unfortunately I did not take any of the gmatclub tests. From what I understand, they are meant to give you familiarity with performing harder questions in a short amount of time. I don't think they are meant to mimic the actual GMAT. For this, you would need to take full length tests, such as GMAT Preptest, MGMAT, Kaplan, etc.
