GOOD STUFF kwam! +3 kudos!

This is what I was hoping to see. Interesting to see that Chicago GSB used to be in the 2nd tier with the Haas/Duke/Tuck cluster for USNews only *3* years ago, and then bolted up to #4 and the top their recently. Shows how perceptions CAN change with determination from the school. Looks like Haas was ranked *higher* than Chicago in 2006, and they flip flopped for many years before that. Harper Center and Rose Martinelli anyone?

BW is a crazy mess it seems. Wow... Haas was down in 19 at one point? ouch! Hopefully they can stay in the top 10 from now on... this October will be interesting (when BW publishes their 2008 rankings).

kwam, that PPT slideshow from the UC Irvine B-school dean was most interesting. I read through that and understand his "lament" now with rankings and what BW started... :P

If US News tweaks the rankings to reflect public perception, and given that public perception is shaped by its rankings, do we ever expect a big change in the USNews rankings?? This is one reason why 'yield' should never be a part of the ranking model...

We certainly need the BW and FT rankings which shake things up year to year...Those rankings maybe one reason US News decided to bring GSB into a tie with MIT..

to me it looks like US News has quite a bit of movement, even though not as big as BW (which is probably a good thing). CHicago moved up from 6-8th in mid-2000s to #4 now, UCLA had a huge jump, and Haas moves around a bit.

BW definitely has a lot of schools that bounce. Some like K are rather stable but not many stay within 2 or 3 spots.

USNews the schools seem to stay within bands. Its also interesting to see peaks and valleys for some schools over the years. I wish I could post at work, tomorrow I will try to graph the each ranking by school so bw and usnews are on one graph to see the trends. I am curious if USnews and BW follow the same up and downs or if schools go up on one and down on the other.

You would expect some degree of variance, mainly because the student body will be different each year.

I did the M7 schools individually to compare the US News and BW rankings. Some schools do well in both (Kellogg and Wharton) others dont (MIT is shockingly different). Note 2000 and 2001 are missing for US News so I just connected 1999 and 2002 with a straight line for US news.

Re: Rankings down the years... [#permalink]
nice! you can tell which schools are constants and which are more volatile (for US News only, since BW is all over the place). Chicago and Columbia seems to have fluctuated quite a bit in the past. Whereas Kellogg is always in the #3-5 area, H/S are #1-3, and Wharton is #3-4.

MIT is a strange one...

Maybe MIT's rise is due to the increased awareness of technology and its role in business?

that makes sense. Similar to how Haas is rising lately and it found its voice in Technology, Non Profit, Social Responsibility, and Innovation/Entrepreneurship.

MIT was really highly rated in the mid 90s and then recently. So the tech statement might be a good point.

Kellogg was actually rather steady on BW too but the rest seem to spike both up and down.

I see now that BW has not had either Harvard OR Stanford as #1 for the last xx years. This is sketchy at best, as it seems to be fairly accepted that these schools are the cream of the crop.

Guys,

A quick question: any ideas as to why Rochester has gone from 23rd down to 30th in recent years?

It seems that the dean there gets high ratings from a lot of people, and that there's a steady supply of treasury jobs for graduates.

Why the change?

surprised to see Fuqua hovering in the 10/11 spot so much, this school seems very overlooked and clumped closer to #15 schools frequently. I guess location and its relative youth keep it underrated.

LOL! At least Berkeley made it to the top 10. And trust me, parking is easier to find at Berkeley now than it is at UCLA.
