I find myself using the word being quite often while writing my essays. I know the GMAT rule says that the usage of the word being is almost always wrong. I was wondering whether the same rules apply to the essays. Any advice would be much appreciated

Using the word "being" can make a sentence wordy and awkward. There are times when being is necessary. If your essays need it then use it, but I don't think one should overuse "being", or any other word for that matter.

When you write your essay, I'd advise you not to be too hung up about it. Remember, there's a time limit. Write it, and if you have time left over, go back and prune your "being"s as you see fit. It'll be better to lose a half point for wordiness or whatever than losing one or more because your arguments/conclusions suffered because you spent too much time stressing over the "being" count.

yeah you can do but it is not necessary to write whatever you want if u have less time.one should take care about it...
