Not okay for interviews, in my opinion. You need a dark charcoal or navy.

Background is in consulting and high tech...not necessarily the most fashion forward industries!

I've gotten mixed results from other people as well so it looks like I may be suit hunting this weekend.

another vote for a new suit.

plus don't think of it as just being for the interviews... you'll get great mileage out of a charcoal or navy suit.

the one thing i'd say is that the geography of where you're doing your interviews and with whom are possibly relevant. If you live in the Bay Area or Seattle and are interviewing with an alum... you'd probably be fine. If you're heading to campus to meet with adcom, i'd definitely go conservative. If it's somewhere in the middle (adcom locally or alum in tech in NYC), i'd err on the side of conservative... but it would be less clear.

Agree, this is just too light/shiny for a formal interview. Dark suit, light shirt, conservative tie, spit-shined shoes. Can't go wrong with that.

is a black suit a no-no for interviews? can people really tell the difference between navy and black?

I don't know if its the photo and perhaps the lighting, but that has far far too much sheen. Dark navy / charcoal vote here as well. I'm too lazy to find a good photo, but go for something a bit like this color. Please note there is a difference between black and dark navy.

I can tell immediately and, personally I'm not a fan of black suits - I think they belong in funerals. That said, you could do far far worse.

I think it is too shiny,
the fabric does not look high quality.

Re: Do you think this suit color is ok for interviews? [#permalink]
I think it's a great suit - if you showed up with that suit on for a dinner date, I'd be impressed (I'm a woman) - but not for an interview.

If it helps you to justify buying a new suit, remember that a year from now you'll need a suit for interviews for summer internships and you probably have more disposable income now than you will then. As my mother put it while I was debating over buying a new suit, "You're applying to business school, not art school, buy a new suit." (I wear a suit to work a couple of times a week though - so I knew I'd get use out of it no matter what). Just be thankful you're not a woman - it's nearly impossible to find an interview-appropriate, conservative (but not old-lady-ish) suit....

Black suits are for black tie affairs and funerals. They should never be worn otherwise!!

To the OP - invest in getting a charcoal/navy. It is multi-purpose and constitute wardrobe staples for men who need to wear suits.

another vote for a 2-button dark navy blue suit.

it will also come in handy for presentations / interviews during mba schoo.

Re: Do you think this suit color is ok for interviews? [#permalink]
Yes, there is a definite sheen on the suit and does come off a bit shiny in photos. This was a bespoke suit that I purchased while working in London so it better be high quality for the money I paid for it! It is a pretty informal suit that I wear for summer weddings. Ironically, I do own a handful of suits, but I tend to only wear them for social occasions (never have to wear one for work) so they tend to be more fashionable (knaki, lighter gray than this, bold pin stripes, tuxedo ,etc.).

Thanks for the input everyone, going to buy another suit today!
