US Part Time MBA Rankings, Class Profiles and Comparison

I just wanted to share something that a friend of mine told me about Stern's part-time program, which he is considering. Basically what he heard was that if you hand in your homework - emphasis on "hand in" - you're guaranteed to pass the class, regardless of the quality of what you hand in. I don't know if it's true or not, but that's just one (and only) data point that I have. If it's true, it doesn't bode well for the quality of the part-time program. That said, from what I've heard, the quality of its full-time program is solid.

Read the methodology. They give how a student felt aaboit the options after graduation at about 20-30% this is somewhat important because most people go to school for success. With that said, someone who gets into Stern or UCLA has an expectation to make $100k out of school. Naturally if they don't get a high paying job will give a low review. Someone who gets into a no name school would gave a higher score hence skewing the rankings. Hope that makes sense.

Hello, Milias!

I have heard comments like this regarding PT programs in general (a friend of mine went to UConn part time and told me pretty much the same story). Because PT students are full time workers, who often times have a family of spouse and kids at home, I can see why schools would try to make "life easier" for these students -- or risk becoming too unappealing of an option for busy professionals. Whether right or wrong, I can see that happening. The same situation may very well happen at NYU, although this is hard to prove or confirm.

What struck me here, however, are two different things: #1, although I understand that different criteria are used, how can there be so much difference between the two rankings? What happend to consistency? So is NYU the best program out there or is it a mediocre one? Is it fair to average the two rankings and call NYU's PT program a "middle-of-the-packer"? It just doesn't pass the smell test.

#2, even if I assume that the PT program at NYU has fundamental flaws and is not, say, a top 5 program in the country, does it make sense to say that it trails University of Denver? University of Nevada? Just ask yourself this question: would you rather have a degree from NYU or from Elon University? Once again, I am just applying a high-level "smell test" here, and not going deeper into an analysis of BW's ranking criteria.

I follow what you are saying, and I understand that a difference in ranking methodology will generate different results. But when a program that (call me out if you disagree) most people would consider to be a pretty strong part time option with very good "name brand", good faculty (Nobel laureate included), dozens of options for specialization, strong alumni network, proximity to the financial center gets ranked 25th, behind several schools whose business programs we know very little about... well, then I have to question the validity of that ranking's criteria, whatever they may be, and whether they are really accurate at evaluating the quality of the programs.

I totally agree with you, I think it's partly the methodology because as you stated, there is no reason for such a big variance. USC is a good school, but according to BW LMU's PT program is better.

I cross reference the FT and PT programs, and if a school is only on the PT chart I pretend they don't exist.

I think that it needs to be mentioned that there are part-time MBA programs, and there are people who pursue MBA degrees on a part-time basis. The distinction is that there are some schools who do not maintain a different program/cohort for part-time students. In these instances, the students take the same coursework as the full-time students. Therefore it is not 'easier' or 'harder' -- except that they have a reduced courseload.

Does anyone know why UC Davis's part-time programs are not in the list. Is it worth considering them?

Riddle me this..why are Wharton and Columbia not on that list - they both offer part time MBAs.

As a matter of fact neither of these schools offers part-time MBA. They have Executive MBA, but Executive programs are considered to be distinct offerings and differ from the "traditional" part-time. Therefore they are ranked under separate categories. So to compare Executive MBA, or EMBA, you should go to the EMBA tab under Businessweek b-schools rankings: https://www.businessweek.com/bschools/rankings/ There you will find both these schools at 3 and 4 positions respectively.

It sounds strange that Kelloggs is ranked 2nd inspite of BW(not listed), USN(ranking it low)...There is no explanation on the rationale behind these rankings...

Those are 2011 figures... read back a couple posts. Also, all the admin dates in the chart are for the current year.
