Anyone else hating Berkeley's copy and past essay format? It keeps putting random spaces in my essays and making some paragraphs with font twice as large as others. This is so frustrating. I've had no problems with other schools so far. Maybe its just me?

They easily have the worst application of any school that I have applied to. The formatting issues are completely unnecessary.

The worst part about it was that Haas' word count always seemed to be 10-20 words higher than Microsoft's

I noticed the same issue, but I didn't edit my essays to reduce word count. Hopefully they know that their word counter isn't working properly.

Yes, that application was frustrating, when it came to formatting, pretty much was fighting against it to make sure everything showed up properly.

I discovered their online word counter counts spaces after the period as words. <--Two words right there! They sure add up. Also, carriage return (paragraph breaks) also count as a word. Pretty crude way of arriving at a word count.

Question for kryzak or others: my manager has been working on a recommendation letter for a while that flows, tells a story, all that jazz...and has just realized that the online form asks for the response to be broken out by question. There's an option to paste a single response for everything, but the form has a note that the school "strongly prefers" that they be separated.

Is it really a bad thing to paste a single response? My manager, bless her, doesn't want to let the small stuff have an impact on my application...but I hate to have her spend more time splitting it out if it's not necessary.

Thanks for the input!

I wouldn't sweat it. The admissions committee understands how much trouble it is for a supervisor to write individual letters for each school an applicant is applying to. If your manager can easily break the letter into paragraphs to address the questions, that's probably good. But if it involves some time and rewrite, then I would just say one single letter is good enough.

What kind of background do the typical Haas admits/current students have? I mean besides a high gpa/gmat, are they all silicon valley/techy types?

I worked for mid sized private real estate developer in los angeles doing construction management/operations, have a masters in urban planning, and hope to get into social enterprise post MBA. While Berkeley has a reputation for being progressive and receptive to social enterprise, I just have this really bad feeling about sending out an app. I just cant shake this feeling that they are more of a silicon valley/entrepreneurship/tech school. I'm applying through the consortium, so I need to make school choices carefully :o

Like Aver said, we have very diverse backgrounds. You can find it on our website here:

https://mba.haas.berkeley.edu/community/ ... ofile.html

In fact, someone in my class did something similar to what you did and I know another one in the class below mine.

If you're applying through the consortium, isn't it pretty straightforward to submit a Haas essay too?

Does anyone know or have an idea on how strict Haas is about its word limits on essays?

I mean, is it OK to go over by 5-10%?

Thanks

p.s. sorry if this has been answered elsewhere

I got in with a 5-10% overage. Don't worry too much about it as long as you're not OBVIOUSLY over.

Hey I'm pondering whether or not I should apply for round 2 for Haas. I love the school and I am hoping to plan a visit as long as it's not a 100% chance of ding.
Age at Matriculation : 26
Future Desired Industry: Social Commerce Entrepreneurship (long term), Management consulting( short term to gain more leadership/mgmt experience)
Undergraduate school: Top 10 Engineering (co-op student)
Undergraduate GPA: 3.0
Professional: Founded and President of own successful companies(2) during undergrad (partial cause of semi low performance). Worked part time and full time for startup consulting firm while attending school after coop program. Still working as an investment consulting analyst for Morgan Stanley. Not a lot of high meaningful experience but did have a large impact on a few projects I initiated.
GMAT: 710 (Q:48, V:40, AWA:6)
Extra curricular: Online community leader and mentor/tutor for underprivileged children. Active in providing educational materials to chilrden in asia and africa.

Any thoughts would be nice. The mid 80% GPA kinda of scares me along with the low acceptance rate but I think Haas would be a good fit for me overall.

Definitely go for it. You should probably be shooting for even higher than Haas, also.

@wonderland: Go for it. GPA is only one aspect of the application process.

@Pediashare: there's no exact number, but in the past rumors have been between 30-70% depending on the year.

Hey everyone,

We've been working on new ways to better assist everyone in their business school research and school selection. As part of that effort, we've created school guides for a handful of schools and we'd like your feedback. For now, think of these school guides as a beta. If there's anything that you'd like to see added to the guide, please let us know! If you find these guides to be helpful, we'll build similar guides for all of the other top schools.

Looks like this went un-noticed.

There's probably a disadvantage, but it may not be as big as normal.
