Surprised you backed to industry again, not interested in consulting or banking sectors? :)

BTW, would you mind to share something from your point of view that how hard for a, well HKUST MBA, to change function/industry afterward? I am also coming from industry background, but really want to enter VC/PE cause by doing this, i can take advantage of both my mba experience and industry knowledge.

togafoot,
is hkust ultra competitive? the class size is very small yet the gmat score range is not that high but the ranking is... it is kinda weird. Are there not as many applicants for whatever reason?

Re: HKUST 2011-2012 - Calling All Applicants [#permalink]
Economic climate matters a lot. For the past couple of years it has been difficult for anyone to switch function and industry. Usually changing one is quite normal, but to do both, particularly during an economic downturn is nearly impossible.

Personally, was not interested in finance, consulting... maybe, but decided against it due to work / life / balance reasons. Consulting from Hong Kong requires a lot of travel around Asia, and with 2 small kids, it`s not good for them, plus my main passion is in Tech (entertainment), so I`m focusing on the start-up world in this region... Why not USA? Well, lifestyle is one of the current main reasons. I went on exchange to Berkeley, and the tech-entrepreneurship atmosphere is second to none, but I had to balance it to living in a 24/7 serviced city in Asia and balance that with family needs as well. I particularly enjoy Asian culture and the fact that Hong Kong is 4 hours from almost everywhere in Asia makes it a compelling sell when looking at multiple vacation plans (work life balance) if you are based here. So for now, Asia is the right environment for me.

Thinking about putting together an application to this school. What do you think of my chances?

Undergrad -
CUNY City College of New York
3.2 in Economics

Work -
3 years teaching English in Japan on the Japan Exchange Teaching Program. Last two years as regional adviser. Since coming to Japan I've gone from zero Japanese to passing the highest level of the Japanese language proficiency test. So I'm moderately fluent there. Before university I spent 2 years in US Army as a cavalry scout.

I'm interested in finance and general international business with an Asian focus. This program looks perfect for me but I'm worried about my lowish GPA and lack of business experience. The plus on my application is my international experience here in Japan so I'm hoping that can pull my application up. What do you guys think?

Also worried about the lack of detail asked for the recommendation forms...also doesn't say anything about how to get letters from people who cannot speak English. I need them professionally translated, not sent on their online system.

Round 2 for me. I'm not sure if it would be possible for me to get my GMAT score report in time for round one.

Essay 6 looks rather difficult for me. I'm an elementary school teacher in rural Japan. Not too many ethical dilemmas out here. I can't really think of any good examples in the last 3 years.

I am applying for Round 1! My current GMAT is 600 but am retaking it Nov 15 (squeezing it right in!). I did speak to an ambassador for 20 minutes when the school reps came to NYC for a MBA tradeshow. She was very sweet and encouraged me to up my GMAT to 650 to make it more competitive.

FYI, my undergrad GPA is 3.0, and I have 8 yrs of work experience at a FG100 company.

Good luck to all of us!
