Hi Rishi,
You said that you prepared for just 2.5 month. For a person who doesn't have that super duper brain,do you think that this much time is sufficient for getting a good score ?

Well, the duration for which one prepares for the GMAT varies from person to person. So while some people may get great scores on the GMAT by studying for only 1-2 month, others even prepare for 6 months to 1 year.
The idea is to take the GMAT when you think you're the best prepared. But one need to ensure that one doesn't lose the momentum while preparing.

Hello everyone

I've been a silent spectator on this forum all this while when i've been preparing for the GMAT so now that it's over and done with, just thought i should post my strategies so others like me could also benefit from these:

Brief background - Engineer from India, WE - 3yrs in IT

Preparation Time - Started preparing in July so roughly 2 and a half months

Practice test scores

Kaplan Free test - 760
Princeton Free test - 740
Veritas Free Test - 710
MGMAT Free test - 740
GMAT Prep 1 - 770
GMAT Prep 2 - 760
GMAT Prep 1 (Retake) - 780
GMAT Prep 2 (Retake) - 780

Practice material used

Used the following for both quant and verbal - OG 10,11,12 & Kaplan Advanced

Additionally used the following material for verbal:

SC - Manhattan SC - The best book for SC as is universally acknowledged by all
- Aristotle SC Grail - Found this surprisingly useful for SC, sort of like a concise version of Manhattan with an excellent idiom list

CR - Powerscore CR Bible
- Some LSAT practice tests

RC - (set of 99 passages across difficulty levels)

I was always depending on Verbal as my stronger area so worked very hard on improving the same.

Test Experience - Nerves really tend to get the better of you initially. Think I started badly in Quant but settled down after the 1st 8-10 questions. Had a candy bar during the break and started with verbal which went like a breeze. clicked on Report scores and was overjoyed to see a 760 on the screen :-D

In case there are any specific queries would love to address those. Also in case any of you need any of the practice materials mentioned above just PM me.

Cheers!

s/w engineer, 3yrs IT ... :-D ... same boat, matey! Wonder how many folks like us are out there! I hope LBS doesn't discard one of our applications thinking - geez! this guy applied twice with a different name! :P

In fact, I think I saw someone here who is from my company :O. Apart from LBS, I ll be applying to Harvard, Stanford, Haas and Stern (atleast that's what I plan to do) unless I crack and opt for safer schools.

:-D Yeah, our profiles look replicas of each other. I think that to the Adcoms, it doesn't matter much whether you have a 720 or 760.As long as you're above the 700+, what they look for is the profile and what value a candidate can add to their program.
However, a great GMAT score definitely helps in lapping up scholarships

Congra, Rishiraj. I think you did great. I know it's a lot of work as I myself am in the middle of the GMAT preparation process too.

I have roughly 10 days till the test date. What do you think is important to do during this period? Would that be going through as many practice tests as possible? I kinda burn myself at least 8 hours per day practicing as much as I can, but did not see much improvement.

Thanks and Congra again.

Hi Rishi,

I am practicing passages from RC99.. thanks... the material is really good and more like GMAT questions...

can you please tell the passages and Q's in real GMAT was like Medium / High difficulty passages in RC99?

my accuracy is fine. but i took 19 mins for 1 HIGH difficulty passage and 8 mins for MEDIUM difficulty passage.

Any inputs would be useful...

In the last ten days, you should take around 5-6 tests, not more than that. Just revise whatever you have done and please please don't burn yourself. Revise MGMAT SC and Aristotle SC Grail. Do at the max, two RCs but not above that .I keep on telling people here on the forums that GMAT is as much an exam of your nerves as it is of your preparation.
Just ensure that your relaxing adequately each day.

Ya, I agree RC99 passages are quite good, and to a great extent mimic the actual passages and question types you see on the GMAT.
I don't remember exactly what was the difficulty level of the passages. I guess the difficulty level of two passages I had got on the GMAT would be comparable to the medium difficulty level passages on RC99 and the difficulty level of the rest two passages would be comparable to the high difficulty level passages in RC99.

As you'll become more comfortable with tougher text, I think the time you spend on each passage will go down. Did you start RC99 right from the low difficulty passages or straightway jumped to medium and high difficulty passages ?

RC99 doesn't state the difficulty level of each passage. Rather,it categorizes the questions in three difficulty levels of difficulty-low,medium and high. I guess there are 33 passages of each level.

Great score, man! Congrats! Need your advice. I am aiming for 700+ but am not good at Verbal. Can it really be improved ? I have plenty of time as I am not targetting this admission cycle. Would be glad if you can let me know how to improve. :)
Thanks
