Hi, I am stressing about my app because I'm not sure how to best present/explain my work history and whether I am qualified for the schools I am aiming for.
Here is the lowdown:
Age: 25
Undergrad: UCLA B.A. in American Literature & Culture, Minor in Global Studies, Class of 2007 (took two Econ classes with a B and an A-, Stats Honors with a B-, series of Global Studies classes with Economic component, passed out of Calc with 5 on the AP in high school, had an 800 in SAT I math and 790 in SAT II math--does anything from HS matter?)
GPA: 3.42
Extracurriculars: Was involved in Chinese Cultural Dance for five years, including stints as Assistant Production Manager of PR and Newsletter Editor. Involved with Christian fellowships for four years and was a Bible study leader and Summer Training Program leader.
GMAT: 730 (V42, Q47, AWA6)
Work history: This is where it gets complicated...
During college I interned for a summer in the Marketing/PR dept of a travel trade magazine.
I essentially worked on a volunteer basis for my church full time for a year, while holding a part time marketing assistant job for about 7 months.
A few months after that I worked as a Media Intern for a social networking website and was promoted to Media Coordinator. I worked there full time for a total of about a year as well.
After that I basically took an 8 month break, during which I worked a bit for my dad (writing and editing marketing docs), explored personal interests like writing, tutored, and studied for GMATs. Since then I started working for my previous company again, this time on a part time basis. I've basically re-branded myself as a freelance writer, as I've been mostly doing writing work for that company, as well as writing for a magazine. I have also been blogging and taking web design class and have a couple web companies fermenting in my head. Once I finish apps, I plan to work more on developing those sites.
Career goal: My goal following graduation from b-school would be to be an associate marketing manager or product manager for a larger digital media company like Amazon, while developing my web businesses on the side. Eventually I want to be able to develop those side projects into a full-time gig. The writing stuff ties in because one of the businesses I would like to start is a web-based magazine for young women.
Schools I'm applying for: UW Foster, Anderson, Marshall, Ross, Kellogg, HBS, Stern, Columbia, Stanford, Haas, Tuck
Any help you can offer would be great. Thanks so much!
