Anyone taking supplemental courses like Calc or Stats? [#permalink] New post   23 Feb 2011, 16:57
I was advised to take a couple of math classes since I only had a couple of Econ classes in undergrad. Any recs for online or local in SoCal?

UCLA extension has some really good classes that you can take and is probably one of the most recognizable extensions that can help achieve your goal.

You should check your state colleges/universities for these courses...some schools will have summer admissions too,you could apply for that and complete the courses that you would need.. I think the Cal state University system should work..also check UCLA that bakfed has mentioned

ya, let me just clarify what I said in my earlier thread. I've never took any "outside" courses after my undergraduate studies. I've only heard that UCLA extension is a good way to go, but I'm sure there are other avenues one can take.

Are you taking the class to prep for grad school or to pre for the GMAT?

If for the GMAT, don't take a college/university college class. The content on the GMAT (per the GMAC) does not test above high school level math (stopping with basic trig). The problem people run into is problem solving skills and remembering equations (volume, work, area, etc.).

The classes would be prep for B School. I only took Econ in undergrad and I was told I need a couple more Quant classes to show I'm capable.

Thanks, I did look into UCLA extension before. However, I was told the classes are graded on a serious curve and if I take the classes, I need an A.

I checked out Cal State LA too, but it seems that some of their courses require pre-req's that I just don't have time for.... This is all becoming super annoying! Aaaargh

My GPA from undergrad was really soft, so I have taken a few rigorous classes to prove I have the ability. That and earned CFA charter and 700+ GMAT.

I took three classes at Berkeley Extension and a couple at UC Irvine extension, all with A's.

What classes did you take? The person I spoke with advised against the extension courses because of the grading curve

I too will be taking calc and stat and possibly some other quant classes before applying and I'm just taking them at my local community college. Don't see any reason not to.

I took Options/Futures at Berkeley, Calc X1B at Berkeley, Economic Indicators at Berkeley, Financial Risk Mgmt at UCI and Investments at UCI.

I don't think many of these were curved. I know for a fact Calc and the Investments classes weren't curved.

I would advise asking the admissions of your target schools for specific guidance.
