If I were you, I would look to sit it earlier, begin preparation based on the abundance of material for the current format, and nail it!

I took the GMAT a couple days ago and I was one of the integrated reasoning guinea pigs. After the test I sat for another 12 questions in the new format. They had two basic types:

The first is an elaborate decision flow chart, resembling a complex snowflake or some wacky molecule. The questions were about following the logical flow of the chart, like "If [A] then, [B], [C] or [D] etc?"

The second type looked like a reading comprehension thing, with text on one side and questions on the other, except instead of a 3 paragraph block of text, there was just a few sentence introductory blurb, and then other tabs you'd click on to reveal tables of data. The questions were all about reading the tables. Interestingly, these questions had a calculator to use within the software, since many of the questions boiled down to "which row has the following ratio between column A and column B."

Basically, the questions seemed to be testing PowerPoint and Excel literacy, respectively, which I guess is pretty pertinent to the modern B-school curriculum (certainly moreso than dastardly data sufficiency inequalities about the absolute value of various unknown variables would be)

Hi Guatam,

Kaplan does offer Integrated Reasoning prep as part of it's courses. However, while prep for this new section is necessary, we still recommend focusing your efforts on the Quantitative and Verbal sections of the exam. It's possible that this will change in the future, but right now, there simply isn't enough data correlating IR scores with B-school success for admissions departments to strongly consider them during the application process. A very low IR score might be a red flag, but schools are currently more likely to care about your 200-800 score than your 1-8 Integrated Reasoning score!

Hi all, I wrote my GMAT 8 days ago but have not received my IR/AWA scores in my email. Is that normal? Should I contact GMAC and check or give it a few more days? I got my AWA score within 3 days the last time.

Guess the response is delayed but per the site the score will be reported in 20 days. I guess you would have got it by now.

Hello, what minimum IR score should I aim at? I am taking exam in a few weeks. I am not at all prepared for this section and have not been fond of interpreting data.

Hey Winds, most schools are not taking the score too seriously this year. INSEAD released a statement that they won't factor it in the final decisions for 2013 apps. That said, one doesn't know if that will change next year, or whether some schools are going to see a low IR score and form some kind of judgement (after all, we're all taking it easy so a higher IR score for an equivalent GMAT raw score means you managed to fit in a more holistic prep).

I wrote the GMAT again last month and neglected IR, but ended up with a 6 (67%). All I did was the 2 GMAC prep IR's, I analyzed these a bit to glean a few tips and tricks, and I did 2 Manhattan test IR's (silly tough, but really force you to prioritize time/rough calculations over incorrectly reading in depth).

Bottom line, You should aim for 5+ depending on what schools you're targeting. I'd say don't spend too much time on IR, but do the GMAC stuff and maybe 1 or two other practice IR's. Better safe than sorry.
