My reasons:

a) S-V agreement: flow pattern is singular.

b) Construction:
Although...., (clause).

c) Active voice is better.
(clause) although...-

Selected C and E easily because relate " pattern _______is known as."

But still confused between C and E.
C looks okay "crests and troughs that remain stationary although the air that form them is moving rapidly" representing strong contrast but doubt if GMAT prefer they over them. If later is the case then right answer should be E.

What is OA.

I went with E.

'air that forms them is moving rapidly' did not sound right to me.

Subject verb agreement
and in E although clause is incorrectly connected to the prepositional phrase. rephrase the sentence take although clause 1st and then second part of the clause you will find option D doesn't make sense

C it is. I think the only confusion in this question will be active vs passive voice. I would go with the active voice as it also sounds better in this context. E just looks clumsy.

C. Flow pattern should be described by singular verb is and not by are. Subject-Verb case.
