Hello Aximili85, thanks for your question.
I agree with you that it’d be great to raise your quantitative GMAT score to 80% to put you in contention for top programs. Also, your GPA is slightly low, though I am unfamiliar with how admissions committees view Canadian GPAs. Do you have a different analogue/data point that is a better representation for your academic aptitude and potential?
In terms of your work experience, I think your year in Costa Rica will help you. I think your competitiveness will come down to the quality of your work experience. Can you draw upon “moments” when you truly led: influenced individuals and organizations, drove results, took initiative? Leadership/management is not just managing subordinates. It’s making an impact, which can be in a variety of ways.
Your extracurriculars actually seem like a strength, to me. For chess, it’s not about how good you are. It’s about how you engage with the world, pursue your passions. And, you are an acclaimed blogger! To the degree that you can call out leadership and teamwork skills through your extracurriculars, that can mitigate a lack of official volunteer experience.
In terms of your post-MBA goals, make sure to paint a picture that cohesively ties together your past, present, and future. Can you tie in your teacher’s assistant, advertising, and health care roles into an overall plausible story? And, you should clearly demonstrate to the admissions committees that your desired career path necessitates an MBA. Aren’t you already on a path that leads to healthcare consulting or a corporate strategy job?
Generally, I think you have a good handle on your relative chances at the programs on your list. My only advice is to continue to put yourself in a position to have impactful leadership experiences both in and out of work!
