GMAT 700! and I have no idea how that happened.

Hi,

I took the GMAT last month for the second time and I got a score of 700!
The first try I studied for a month out of the princeton review cracking the GMAT and the OG12 and recieved a 640.
(V 36 - Q 42). Since my percentile was much lower on the quant section than the verbal, for my second try I would focus mainly on the quant section.
I did the kaplan GMAT premier book and only the OG11 quant section with several exam simulations each week for two months.
I also started reading a fiction novel the last week to improve my verbal but did not do any specific verbal exercises.
In the Kaplan tests I could not get past 600 so my target score was 680.

So to my surprise I got a 700 total score (V 41 - Q 44)

I honestly do not know how this happened and why my verbal score was so high. I believe there is also some luck on the questions you get and how calm and focused you arrive on test day.

I hope this helps someone with their future tests.

Congrates for the great score..!!

Can you please share the question split up (SC, CR , RC) of Verbal in Actual GMAT? Also, any specific strategy you applied for Verbal? More insight will be helpful.

Not too surprising. Many people struggle with the Kaplan tests and do much better on the real thing. Congratulations on a great score though!

Hi Aj,

The Actual GMAT does not give you the question split up, just your verbal general score. But I think I messed up in some CR questions.

One of the things that I believe helps in your verbal is to read a well written book. This way you can practice for the RC part and not have to focus on so many RC exercises.
I was reading The Life and Times of Michael K from J.M. Coetzee, it is a very good book.
Also try to do as many pratice test so that once you get to the verbal part in the real test you are not as tired as if your not used to 3 hour tests.

That is so good - congratulations!! I wrote my gmat last week, and I was quite upset with my score. I've studied engineering so I am pretty good with math, but I think I was just extremely nervous and scared of getting a bad score. I am thinking of writing the gmat again, and need some feedback as to what the best way to study is now.. should i take a course? Please let me know your feedback. Thanks

hi, I think the best way to study would be the one that acommodates you the most. If you have self discipline and you think all that you are missing is some more practice then I wouldn't recommend a course.
If you do need the extra help and more technique you should take a course. the knewton course guaranties an 50 point imporvent or your money back, so you don't have much to loose there.

If you need to improve your verbal, you should start reading a novel beside your usual study exercises.
