Re: Profile Evaluation - Oil/Gas Professional [#permalink]
Hi Shekhar,

Good to know that you are planning well ahead of time. The type of program will depend on the time when you are doing an MBA and on your career goals. Career switchers usually prefer a two year MBA as they get an opportunity for an internship favoring the career shift. For career enhancement with good amount of work-ex, maybe you can prefer a 1 year MBA so you can get done quickly.

By being in a technical role also, you can display leadership skills. To show leadership skills, you need not necessarily be in a leadership position. It is the leadership 'potential' that you have to show and that can be shown by skills such as decision making, innovation, professional maturity, team skills, etc.

Do not think of financial constraints right now... It's too early. You will anyway get a financial aid wherever you apply. Right now, just focus on your career and build your profile well.

Congratulation on your GMAT scores. A score above 700 is desirable when applying to top schools.
However GMAT alone won’t determine your chances of admission; beyond the academics and your work experience plays a vital role as well. So make sure you demonstrate those aspects as well.
If you wish to apply to top business schools then one of the prerequisites is having significant work experience. Generally candidates have around 4-5 years of full time experience in spite of several term time projects or jobs; so you may be competing with other candidates who have 4-5 years of full time experience and have started significant initiatives at college.
Hence, we would advise you to gain some full time work experience before you decide to apply for an MBA. Unfortunately in general most of the Indian applicants are from engineering background with a good 4-5 years of work experience. So you would need to differentiate yourself from others. Start thinking what makes you unique and what’s that ‘hook’ that will be key to your application. Make sure you follow the show rather than tell’ principle so that the admissions committee could really understand your strengths and differentiating factors.
As you want to be in consulting you should go for a simple MBA. Going for oil and gas management would firstly limit your school choice plus not all the top schools would be offering you this MBA.
