I think that the correct answer is A.

But C also looks possible, provided there ius no comma after '...and have'.

C seems to change the meaning. E is unnecessari wordy and , like C , changes the meaning.

B, D, and E are wrong for obvious reasons. C changes the intended meaning. According to the sentence, resistance to malaria in people with the sickle cell anemia gene from only one parent is an evolutionary advantage in its own right. (C) says that People who inherit the sickle cell anemia gene from only one parent are resistant to malaria AS WELL AS have some other evolutionary advantage.

People who inherit a gene appear to be resitant to malaria and have an advantage....

however the comma (,) after malaria is disturbing me.

Wow, quite a difference between this and that of Stoylar. This one clearly has some punctuation problems which makes it hard to be answered
