I am going ahead with D.

Stem can be thought to be : An assertion contrary to the general belief. It may be +ve or -ve. Reason has to be behind it rather than mere words.

Thus D exactly parallels the same.

A sounds the most coherent to me. Do parallel reasoning questions like this appear on the GMAT? I know from experience that these are on the LSAT.

A is best. If you can't back up your position, don't defend it. If you defend your position, you should be ready to back it up with a solid reason.
