Re: People with serious financial problems are so worried about money that [#permalink]
This is a typical GMAT Conditional reasoning question. The pattern for this type of Inference questions is:
If X then Y, the inference will be
If NO Y Then NO X
Serious Financial Difficulties—- unhappy
In that case, the Inference will be,
[not] unhappy—- no financial difficulties
Option E fulfills this condition.
A. Only would suggest that there is no other reason for people’s unhappiness
B. To suggest that people ‘Will’ be happy if they solve their financial difficulties is again extreme. Avoid such extreme tone words as ‘only’ ‘must’ ‘will’ ‘always’ especially in Inference questions.
C. people ‘without’ financial difficulties is a diffuser of people NOT DISCUSSED in the passage.
D. This is reversing the cause and effect. the argument stated: If X then Y. This option suggests If Y then X. This would be a good answer for a WEAKEN or FLAW Question type.
E. Yes, if people are happy, we can deduce that they no longer have financial difficulties, thereby validating the claim made in the last sentence of the argument.
Friends, GMAT Critical Reasoning is about logic and critical thinking, true. But it is also about identifying set patterns and formula, like we had for this question.
Hope this helps. If you found my explanation useful, some kudos can definitely add to the motivation.

Vavali wrote:
People with serious financial problems are so worried about money that they cannot be happy. Their misery makes everyone close to them—family, friends, colleagues—unhappy as well. Only if their financial problems are solved can they and those around them be happy.

Which one of the following statements can be properly inferred from the passage?

(A) Only serious problems make people unhappy.

(B) People who solve their serious financial problems will be happy.

(C) People who do not have serious financial problems will be happy.

(D) If people are unhappy, they have serious financial problems.

(E) If people are happy, they do not have serious financial problems.

(A) Only serious problems make people unhappy.
(A) is about serious problems in general and hence is incorrect.
Eliminate (A).

(B) People who solve their serious financial problems will be happy.
This is not necessarily true given the statements above are true.
First, people who solve their serious financial problems may be NOT happy if people close to them also have serious financial problems and make them unhappy.
Second, the argument states that "ONLY IF their financial problems are solved CAN they and those around them be happy.". "Can", which implies possibility, is different from "Will", which implies definite occurrence. Yes, if people can solve their serious financial problems, they CAN be happy. Whether they will be happy after they solve their serious financial problems, we do NOT know.
Eliminate (B).

(C) People who do not have serious financial problems will be happy.
We have 2 reasons to doubt this:
First, people who do NOT have their serious financial problems may be NOT happy if people close to them also have serious financial problems and make them unhappy.
Second, the argument states that "ONLY IF their financial problems ARE SOLVED can they and those around them be happy." So we can not be sure about people who do NOT have serious financial problems AT ALL. Maybe only people who have serious financial problems AND then solve them can be happy.
Eliminate (C).

(D) If people are unhappy, they have serious financial problems.
First, the argument states that if people have serious financial problems, they are unhappy. It does not say that "ONLY IF people have serious problems, they are unhappy": there may be other problems that make people unhappy.
Second, as mentioned in (B) and (C), people may be unhappy and do NOT have serious financial problems if people close to them also have serious financial problems and make them unhappy.
Eliminate (D).

(E) If people are happy, they do not have serious financial problems.
Notice the phrase "ONLY IF" in the sentence "ONLY IF their financial problems are solved CAN they and those around them be happy." If people are happy, they definitely do NOT have serious financial problems because if they have serious financial problems, they can not be happy.

(E) is correct.
