Personal trainers and fitness coaches are to the narcissistic 1980’s just like a private fencing master and dancing teacher was to an earlier time.
(A) just like a private fencing master and dancing teacher was
(B) as have been a private fencing master and dancing teacher
(C) what private fencing masters and dancing teachers were
(D) what private fencing masters and dancing teachers are
(E) just the same as private fencing masters and dancing teachers had been

OA is

C

I understand the structure here. My question is between C and D on the tense. "an earlier time" is just a time like "1980's". If i could replace "an earlier time" with, say, "1970's", doing so shouldn't change the tense of "are".

e.g. Personal trainers and fitness coaches are to the narcissistic 1980’s just like a private fencing master and dancing teacher are to 1970's. --> this usage should be the right, shouldnt it?

Sorry if my English is not very good here. Hope i make my question clear....

'earlier time' means time earlier to 1980s... so if its 1970s, we need simple past in plural..

Correct me if i am wrong. MY understanding is the action of "are to" doesn't really happen in 1980's, or in 1970's. It just means the current status of these people "are like" 1980's. Is the following sentence wrong???

e.g. Personal trainers and fitness coaches are to the narcissistic 1980’s just like private fencing masters and dancing teachers are to 1970's.

You need past tense to indicate that the event took place before the 80s.

i am so confused... Maybe i dont understand what this sentence is trying to say. I thought it is just trying to say all these people are like those in 1980's or 1970's... Can anyone help me understand what this sentence really means????

subjectverb agreement and the sentence pointed the action which occured prior to the 1980. so we need past tense here.

Eliminate option A as it used "was" for the plural subject "fencing master and dancing teacher".

Eliminate option B because it used present tense "have been" for the past action.

Eliminate option D because it used present tense "are" for the past action.

Eliminate option E because it used past tense "had been" -an action which occurred in the past and still continued in the past. but in this sentence we need "simple past"-an action which occurred and completed in the past.

I think my question is, whether "to an earlier time" is a parallel structure to "to the narcissistic 1980’s". If so, I honestly think "are" is correct here. But if "to an earlier time" simply modifies the people, i can understand this is past tense. Maybe i am too picky here. I might just memorize this one... Thanks all anyways.
