(C) what private fencing masters and dancing teachers were

(E) just the same as private fencing masters and dancing teachers had been

I am going to take a guess, as you forgot to underline. ( assuming underline is from "just" till "was" )

I lean towards C. are and were parallel, since the sentence points to "earlier time" it is appropriate to use "were" as opposed to "are". so D is out.

Should be C.
A,B----> "a private fencing master and dancing teacher" is wrong since the non-underlined part talks in plural.
D------> "are" should be "were" since we are talking of earlier time.
E------> too wordy and clumsy.

A is to B as C is to D....

We need the past tense "were" to properly compare the 1980s to an earlier time.

(C)

a private fencing master and dancing teacher make a compound subject and hence are plural. It is just that they are incorrectly used.

Sorry if someone finds it is too easy to mention, but I've gotta bring this up. Could anyone simplify the sentence for me please? I just can not understand what it says at all!

Personal trainers and fitness coaches are to the narcissistic 1980's what private fencing masters and dancing teachers were to an earlier time.

I say C.

I first thought B, but then I read the rest of the sentence. "a private fencing master and dancing teacher"... not || to the beg. of the sentence.

Everything else uses the wrong tense.

Its C....the sentence needs "were"....the psrts in red need to be parallel...

the "what" in green is a indefinite relative pronuon that refers back to "personal trainers and fitness coaches" so we know that we need to make the 2nd part of the sentence ll to the first part...

someone please correct me if I am wrong, I am still learning
