Social Worker: Typically, the physicians in the United States who promote their services do not charge as much as do physicians who do not promote their services at all. Every time physicians are allowed to promote without restriction, the number of physicians promoting their specialty service has gone up, and patients have paid less for these consultations. Recent changes in regulations of such promotions have lifted the requirement that the amount charged for a consultation appear on the promotion. An effect of this change will be that physicians will no longer be inclined to reduce their fees when they start to promote, and many physicians who promote their services will increase their charges to patients.

In the argument above, the two parts in boldface play which of the following roles?

A. The first makes a general claim that the social worker takes to be the truth; the second is proposed as an outcome resulting from the general claim's truth.

B. The first supplies an action and a consequence that the social worker argues will be replicated; the second recognizes a situation that would cause the action and consequence to fall apart.

C. The first supplies an action and a consequence that the social worker perceives will no longer hold true; the second gives an explanation to support that perception.

D. The first provides clarification that the social worker presents in advocacy of a prediction; the second is that prediction.

E. The first recognizes a perspective that opposes the point that the social worker advocates; the second is that point.

Hello Tmoich,

Here goes the analysis of this question.

Premise 01: Typically, the physicians in the United States who promote their services do not charge as much as do physicians who do not promote their services at all.

Intermediate conclusion: Every time physicians are allowed to promote without restriction, the number of physicians promoting their specialty service has gone up, and patients have paid less for these consultations. (Cause and effect relationship between the increase in promotion by physicians and the decrease in fee for patients)

Premise 02: Recent changes in regulations of such promotions have lifted the requirement that the amount charged for a consultation appear on the promotion.

Conclusion (Social workers opinion): An effect of this change will be that physicians will no longer be inclined to reduce their fees when they start to promote, and many physicians who promote their services will increase their charges to patients. (This bold faced portion is social workers opinion)

Here the second bold face portion suggest that social worker believes that "Intermediate conclusion (Bold Face 01)" will not hold true due to "Premise 02"

Based on this analysis answer should be C.

Hope it helps!

There is no explanation in the bold part : "many physicians who promote their services will increase their charges to patients." It is just a prediction. it is actually the perception itself, no the support.

An effect of this change will be that physicians will no longer be inclined to reduce their fees when they start to promote, and many physicians who promote their services will increase their charges to patients.
If bold part has been this, C would have been correct.

D. The first provides clarification that the social worker presents in advocacy of a prediction; the second is that prediction.

D seems more correct to me.As it is clarification, and by that it doesn't mean that author is implying if it is right or wrong. Just clarification.

D is wrong because the first BF is NOT presented to support ( i.e. in advocacy of) the second BF.

Hi R19,

I fell for (B) as well. It is incorrect because of the second part. Option B reads: The first supplies an action and a consequence that the social worker argues will be replicated; the second recognizes a situation that would cause the action and consequence to fall apart. The bold for part II is not a situation, but an explanation. What precedes the bold part II is the situation. If that were in bold, this would be the correct answer.

I hope this helps!
