Here's my take on your questions:

1) I don't think your experience as a TA will help very much. B-schools are most interested in "real world" experience. It could be valuable in rounding our your profile (think of it sort of like extracurricular experience), but not asa replacement for work experience.

2) MS may help, but work experience is more valuable in adcomms' eyes than any degrees.

3) You definitely don't need a finance background to get into a top school. The majority of people in top progams do NOT have finance backgrounds. Your bigger challenge will be differentiating yourself from all of the other Indian/IT applicants with big scores and big degrees. Work experience and real community involvement will be critical here.

4) See my comment above. Your school experience is fine, but many other applicants in your shoes have the same thing. What makes you different?

Scott,

Thanks for the reply...It was helpful.

I have some more doubts remaining :

1) Can professional certifications help in strengthening my application without relavent work exp. ?

( for example..if i want to go into risk managemnt post MBA and i take the professional risk managemnt certfication by writing 3 exams)

2) How much stress does the adcomm give to my academic scores (i have a low GPA of 3.0/4 ..but from a good school)..and could you suggesta ny ways so that i can compensate for this

1) I don't think that a certification will be valued nearly as much as actual work experience. They're looking less for "credentials" and more for accomplishments and achievements.

2) Your GMAT score will help balance out your GPA. Also, demonstrating more maturity and discipline (these are two common reasons for low undergrad grades) now will help convince adcomms that you will take school seriously and excel in b-school.

But work experience is more valuable than academic experience.
