Hello - just found the forum today and after browsing through some profile evaluations I thought I would post my profile and see if I can stir up some constructive feedback. Any comments are welcome - thanks for reading!
Aspirations: Finance-focused MBA with the ability to focus on some more quantitative aspects of the field. Hope to work as a trader at a hedge fund or bulge bracket after graduation - most likely in fixed-income derivatives and structured finance. I'm finishing up a 3-year program at a major US insurance company with graduates of several of the programs I'm interested in. I would like to attend a 2-year full-time program at Wharton, Chicago, Columbia, NYU, MIT, Berkeley, Harvard, Stanford, Dartmouth, Yale, Duke, Michigan, or Cornell stating in Fall 2011. I'm starting to build out my application in advance and so not all aspects are complete.
1) Basic demographic info: 27/M - US Citizen
2) Educational Background: B.S. in Electrical Engineering from University of Maryland - College Park, 3.04/4.00 GPA (3.75 GPA and Academic Honors last 4 semesters - I turned the ship around half-way through). *GMAT not taken yet*
3) Work experience: Fixed Income Analyst (structured products research analyst) at a major US insurance company, monitoring portfolio and making recommendations for purchases/sales - 2nd year of a 3 year program. Previous: Two years at a major US bank developing cashflow models for structured finance transactions.
4) Extracurricular: As dorky as it sounds I enjoy writing computer programs and dissecting the latest gadgets in the market. I build my own computers and modify off the shelf hardware in my spare time. I also enjoy playing computer games and finding ways to reverse engineer software (not maliciously) to better suite my needs. Aside from that I am avid music listener: I used to DJ a radio show while at University and at local clubs, and was president of a student organization for dance music. I also attend the opera and symphony locally whenever possible. I play the piano and trombone. *Edit*: Forgot the obvious ... I became interested in finance as I approached my undergrad graduation. I like to manage my personal portfolio which includes mostly bond funds and individual stocks that I've researched. I used to trade more but my current job doesn't allow me to do so. I also like reading finance books (technical and historical) and building spreadsheets.
5) Short/Long term goals: My short term goals are to finish my three-year program and attend a business school either in the northeast (PA, NY, CT, and MA), Chicago, or California. I would like to attend a finance-focused MBA with the ability to focus on some more quantitative aspects of the field. I hope to work as a trader at a hedge fund or sales-trader / prop-trader at a bulge bracket after graduation - most likely in fixed-income derivatives and structured finance - either for the rest of my career or until something better comes along.
6) Schools: I would like to attend a 2-year full-time program at Wharton, Chicago, Columbia, NYU, MIT, Berkeley, Harvard, Stanford, Dartmouth, Yale, Duke, Michigan, or Cornell stating in Fall 2011. Please help me fill in the gaps here or feel free to tell me if any of these programs are out of reach given my profile!
