A boat traveled a total of 600 miles in two days. If the distance it traveled on the first day was 150 miles less than twice the distance it traveled on the second day, what was the distance, in miles, that it traveled on the second day?

A. 250
B. 275
C. 350
D. 375
E. 450

Total distance \(= 600\)

Let the distance traveled on first day be \(= x\)

Let the distance traveled on second day be \(= y\)

Total distance \(=> x + y = 600\) --------- (i)

The distance it traveled on the first day was \(150\) miles less than twice the distance it traveled on the second day.

\(x = 2y - 150\) -------- (ii)

Substituting value of \(x\) from (ii) to (i), we get;

\(2y - 150 + y = 600\)

\(3y = 600 + 150 = 750\)

\(y = \frac{750}{3} = 250\) miles

Answer (A)...

A. 250
B. 275
C. 350
D. 375
E. 450

Answer explanation
Yes. Backsolve, starting with C. If the boat traveled 350 miles on the second day, then it traveled (2x350-150)=550miles on the first day. The total distance was therefore miles (550+350)=900. This is too big, so you should eliminate B, C and E. For choice A: if the boat traveled 250 miles on the second day, then it traveled (2x250-150)=350 miles on the first day. The total distance was therefore (350+250)=600 miles. This is the number that you were looking for.

I cannot understand this question. By reading the question, I think first day distance should be less than the second day's 2x distance and less 150 miles.

Let x be the distance traveled on the first day.
So, distance traveled on 2nd day = 600 -x

x= 2(600-x) - 150
3x = 1050
x = 350

distance traveled on 2nd day = 600 - 350 = 250

We can let d = distance traveled on the second day. Thus, the distance traveled on the first day = 2d - 150. We can create the equation:

2d - 150 + d = 600

3d = 750

d = 250
