I'm about to put in a deposit, but I just wanted to see what the community thinks!

I'm pivoting from a manager role at a digital marketing agency to product marketing management in tech. I want to work in NYC after graduation. I did my undergrad at Columbia.

I am surprised, CBS is not significantly better than Stern to not offer any $ and Stern giving $$$$
In fact on another post

talked about the CBS employment reports and Stern being better
Go with Stern, save $$$$

Have you shared your full ride offer with CBS to give them a chance to do something for you?

Hey congratulations! I had a similar question with a full ride from both CBS and Stern, and Booth in the mix. I have picked Stern, it’s the better choice.

Someone mentioned how scarce the PM roles are and how hard and competitive they tend to be. You have a good background to potentially go after one but you also need to have a Plan B. The more I talk to current students, the more I keep hearing about the importance of having multiple plans because even the best plans don’t work out during a pandemic.

Sorry, not to scare you but just wanted to say the taking everything into consideration, and that it is hard to count on probabilities, but Stern’s generous offer definitely wins in this case and you can put the deposit down with ease and peace in your heart :-)

Congrats on your admits and scholarship!!!

I agree with everything that has been said here. People coming from a similar background to yours have been remarkably successful in transitioning to PMM. If you'd like I can put you in touch with a few of them that are taking roles at FAANG and some of the other top companies.

Frankly, the difference is cost is substantial and tech is pretty disparate across schools for recruiting (it's based more on the background component, which you do have), so this happens to be one of the easiest recommendations I've had to make so far. You'll also be able to expand your professional network, as I'm sure you have some level of access into Columbia's already.

Your background is definitely great for PMM, which isn’t the same as PM as one poster here might’ve said. PMM roles are more equivalent to what MBAs learn in their program than PM roles.

Columbia and NYU may be similar in recruiting based on their employment reports for top tech employers.

I think the key questions to ask yourself and to find out at these schools are what kind of Product Marketing do you want to do and what specific duties go with that role at those companies.

Example, if you want to do more Product Strategy and Brand Management kind of PMM, then those roles are PMM at Facebook and Adobe or the PM role at Amazon (their “true” PM role working with engineers is the PMT), where you drive product strategy and work both quantitatively and qualitatively like your MBA and consulting type work. If you want the PMM role that’s more traditional marketing, like lifecycle marketing, content creation, and the strategy/branding that lacks quantitative aspects, then that’s the PMM role at Google, for example, or most other tech companies. The PMM role varies from company to company, so it’s important to assess those nuances to see the distinction.

This is where talking to actual professionals at these individual employers is important. And then seeing which of the role you want comes to campus.

CBS (#7?) is not that much better than Stern (#11/12?), so I voted Stern
