Is MAC followed by an MBA a viable move or are the two degrees generally considered to be substitutes?

No, the two programs are not considered substitutes and I think you would be better off getting work experience rather than an MAC if your ultimate goal is an MBA. I don't think the MAC would enhance your MBA application very much.
