If the information above is true, which of the following must also be true?

(A) No French painters are Vorticists.
(B) All Vorticists use acrylic monochromes in their works.
(C) Some French painters do not use acrylic monochromes in their works.
(D) No French painters use acrylic monochromes in their works.
(E) All French painters who use acrylics use acrylic monochromes in their works.

It should be C. We know that there are no acrylic monochrome paintings in the gallery, because only Vorticists use acrylic monochromes, and there are no Vorticists in the gallery. If all the paintings in the gallery are French, and none of them are acrylic monochromes, it must be that some French painters don't use acrylic monochromes.

Amazing !!

Nobody's looking at the word 'ONLY' .. Its straight away mentioned that 'Only Vorticists use acrylic monochromes in their works.'

And hence .. Neither french painters .. nor italian painters .. nor english painters .. rather nobody in this world uses acrylic monochrome , only the vorticists use it !!

And hence the answer is (D) No French painters use acrylic monochromes in their works. !

If the information above is true, which of the following must also be true?
(A) No French painters are Vorticists. may be true, we only know abt french painter who worked at hoular gallery
(B) All Vorticists use acrylic monochromes in their works.again a may be true. we only know that only vorticists used acrylic monochorme, but we do not know if everyone of them used it.
(C) Some French painters do not use acrylic monochromes in their works.only vorticist used acrylic monochorme and they did nit have a painting in hoular. Hoular was painted by french painter. hence those french painter didn't used acrylic monochrome. correct answer
(D) No French painters use acrylic monochromes in their works. we do not if vorticist were frech painters or not. so this may or may not be true
(E) All French painters who use acrylics use acrylic monochromes in their works.again we do not know all french painter.

Every painting is by a french painter
No painting is by Vorticist => Some french painter are not vorticist
Only vorticists use acrylic monochromes => Not vorticists do not use acrylic monochromes

from all three => since Some french painter are not vorticist hence they do not use acrylic monochromes

Ans C it is.

Re: Every painting hanging in the Hoular Gallery is by a French [#permalink]

The answer is C

Explaination :- When faced with terms that you are unfamiliar with or terms that seems made up or unclear, it is always a good strategy to find parallel term that you are an expert in (did my sentence ended in a preposition ?? :-D well well.. that's a topic for some other day )

Although the term "Vorticist" may mean anything such as - impressionist painter or classical painter or Modernist etc etc.. it's still a senseless word for most of us. Whenever I see such random terms I try reduce the argument in every day terms/words. Sometimes it can create further problems and confusion, so don't try it unless you can retain and map the new terms/words to the old ones in the argument.

Lets do it there
Every painting hanging in the Hoular Gallery is by a French painter.
Every SONG in this CD is by a English Singer.
No painting in the Hoular Gallery is by a Vorticist.
No SONG in this CD is by POP-SINGER.
Only Vorticists use acrylic monochromes in their works.
Only POP-SINGER use CRAPPY LYRICS in their songs.

SO our option choices have now become quite clear and easy. Now you can find the flaw in most of the option in 2 seconds based on your knowledge of music genres.
(A) No French painters are Vorticists.
(A) No English singers are POP-SINGERS
Wrong. In this particular CD no english singers are pop singers but in real life there may be many english singers who are pop singers

(B) All Vorticists use acrylic monochromes in their works.
(B) All POP-SINGERS use crappy lyrics in their songs
WRONG:- Read carefully the original statement tell us "Only POP-SINGER use CRAPPY LYRICS in their songs". So if a song has crappy lyrics then definitely 100% it would be by pop singer. But it is not true that all pop singer use crappy lyrics.
For example:- In African jungles only lion attack humans.
But the reverse :- All lion attack humans in african jungle :-->may or may not be true.

(C) Some French painters do not use acrylic monochromes in their works.
(C) Some English singer do not use crappy lyrics in their songs
CORRECT:- Some English singers who sing Rock, Jazz, Rhythm & Soul, Punk or Classical will definitely not use crappy lyrics because only POP-SINGERS uses crappy lyrics. (All English Singers= rock+jazz+classical+pop.) Crappy ones are only pop singers. Others types of singers are ok.

(D) No French painters use acrylic monochromes in their works.
(D)No English singer use crappy lyrics in their work
WRONG :- This statement might be true for this CD but may or may not be true because there may or may not be english pop singers. And if there are pop singers, some of them will definitely use crappy lyrics.

(E) All French painters who use acrylics use acrylic monochromes in their works.
(E) All English singer who are crappy use crappy lyrics in their songs
WRONG:- Some of them might use crappy music, or crappy voice. Some of them may be Brittany Spears  :)
So there are are many reason for being crappy. Similarly there are many categories of acrylic.

Let us break the question stem into premises and conclusions.
Premise 1: Every painting hanging in the Hoular Gallery is by a French painter. (this means that there is no painting in the gallery which is not the work of a French artist)
Premise 2: No painting in the Hoular Gallery is by a Vorticist. (this means that there is no painting in the gallery which is the work of a Vorticist)
Premise 3: Only Vorticists use acrylic monochromes in their works. (this means that the use of acrylic monochromes is exclusive to Vorticists and no other type of artists use it)
Therefore, we can conclude by a combination of all 3 premises that, the Hoular Gallery has only paintings by French artists, and there are no acrylic monochrome paintings.

Now let us examine the options:
Option 1 states: (A) No French painters are Vorticists. This is wrong. Just because the Hoular Gallery does not have paintings by Vorticists doesn't mean that there aren't French Vorticists. There may be but their paintings may not be in the gallery. Hence, option A is incorrect.
Option 2 states: (B) All Vorticists use acrylic monochromes in their works. This is incorrect because the premise doesn't state that all Vorticists use acrylic monochromes. There may be some Vorticists who do not use acrylic monochromes. But no other type of painters use it.
Option 3 states: (C) Some French painters do not use acrylic monochromes in their works. This is correct because out of all the French painters, some use acrylic monochromes, but some do not. Also, the fact that there are French painters who's works are in the gallery show that not all Frent painters use acrylic monochromes.
Option 4 states: (D) No French painters use acrylic monochromes in their works. This is incorrect because there may be French painters who's paintings are not in the gallery who use acrylic monochromes in their works.
Option 5 States: (E) All French painters who use acrylics use acrylic monochromes in their works. This is incorrect and not based on the information given to us in the question stem. It is not necessary that "All" French painters who use acrylics use acrylic monochromes in their works. They may use other acrylics too.

Therefore, option C is the answer.

Re: Every painting hanging in the Hoular Gallery is by a French painter. [#permalink]
Between C and D, D does not have to be true for the conclusion to hold *unless* the gallery holds *ALL* paintings by *ALL* french artists.

So suppose there are 100 French Artists with one painting by each. Say, the gallery holds 50.

Now we know all 50 who have their paintings displayed in the gallery do not use acrylic monochromes (because *ONLY* vorticist used acrylic monochromes and the gallery has *NO* painting by a vorticist).

What must be true for the conclusion to hold true is that *SOME* out of the 100 french artists *must not* use acrylic monochromes, because if *ALL* artists do, they would be vorticist and their paintings would not hang in the gallery and the argument would come apart.

Therefore, C is the correct answer.

(C) Some French painters do not use acrylic monochromes in their works.
