B, C, E -- we can easily eliminate for the reasons that i have highlighted in my post.

Between A and D, i have chosen D because the phrase 1973 signing is better than signing in 1973.

Also it's refers to Agreement here but not any company/thing to show possessive as its commitment .

Agreement cannot have commitment i believe.

The General Agreement on Trade & Tariffs was a landmark deal in committing at its signing in 1973 to reduce trade restrictions around the world.

A . in committing at its signing in 1973 to reduce CORRECT
B. by committing at its signing in 1973 on the reduction of
Wordy
C. at its 1973 signing for committing to reduce
D. for the commitment at its 1973 signing to reduce
Both C and D are utterly wrong. 1973 is year not a number so "in" required.
E. when it was signed in 1973 for its commitment to reduce
Change the meaning

And huge thanks for pointing us toward the inspiration for this question, raghaw and nguyendinhtuong! For anybody who's still struggling with the original question in this thread, I strongly recommend turning your attention to the official version about Oberlin College instead.

To me, it sounds like "in committing" is the wrong idiom. Should be "for its commitment to." The question doesn't exactly parallel the original... Experts - some help please?

D. for the commitment at its 1973 signing to reduce
E. when it was signed in 1973 for its commitment to reduce

B is incorrect in "landmark deal by committing at its..."
C is awkward in "landmark deal at its"
D, is awkward in the usage, "at its 1973 signing to reduce..."
E is the worst of the five in "when it..."
A doesn't sound perfect but the best among the 5.

Re: The General Agreement on Trade & Tariffs was a landmark deal in commit [#permalink]
B is wrong as ‘on the reduction of’ does not convey that their was an intent to reduce.
C ‘for committing’ is improper tense.
D is awkwardly phrased
E ‘when it was’ is denoting time

So, A is the right answer
