The INSEAD Class of 2017/2018 Application
INSEAD, one of the world’s most diverse and globally focused MBA programs, offers admissions with two class intakes per year – one with classes starting in December and one with classes starting in July. Have you started the online application yet? Well, if not, you should take a look below to see what is required of you. INSEAD has one of the longest and most comprehensive applications among the top MBA programs. Some people describe the sheer number of essays as “monstrous”. While some top MBA programs only have one or two essay questions, INSEAD has eight required essays and two optional essays!
Take a look below to get a solid sense of what you will need to pull together to be ready to submit an application and use this overview to help plan out when you will get the required materials together for submission. This article takes you through the gritty details of the INSEAD application, including deadlines, essays, recommendations, and some pertinent application requirements.
Application Deadlines The application deadlines for the Class of December 2017 are: Round 1: March 2, 2016 Round 2: April 20, 2016 Round 3: June 15, 2016 Round 4: July 27, 2016
The application deadlines for the Class of July 2018 are: Round 1: September 21, 2016 Round 2: November 30, 2016 Round 3: January 25, 2017 Round 4: March 1, 2017
Job Description/Short Answer The short answer portion of the INSEAD application will ask specifically about your job description. This section is divided into four mandatory questions and one optional question as follows: 1. Briefly summarise your current (or most recent) job, including the nature of work, major responsibilities, and where relevant, employees under your supervision, size of budget, clients/products and results achieved. 2. What would be your next step in terms of position if you were to remain in the same company? 3. Please give a full description of your career since graduating from university. Describe your career path with the rationale behind your choices. 4. Discuss your short and long term career aspirations with or without an MBA from INSEAD. 5. If you are currently not working or if you plan to leave your current employer more than 2 months before the programme starts, please explain your activities and occupations between leaving your job and the start of the programme. (optional)
Essay Requirements INSEAD’s essay questions are tailored specifically to better understand your motivation as a professional, as a student, and as a person. MBA programs are looking for well-rounded individuals who will be able to excel not just in one area of life, but multiple. The five essay prompts below – four mandatory and one optional – speak to each of these three aspects of the application. 1. Give a candid description of yourself (who are you as a person), stressing the personal characteristics you feel to be your strengths and weaknesses and the main factors which have influenced your personal development, giving examples when necessary (approximately 500 words). 2. Describe the achievement of which you are most proud and explain why. In addition, describe a situation where you failed. How did these experiences impact your relationships with others? Comment on what you learned (approximately 400 words). 3. Tell us about an experience where you were significantly impacted by cultural diversity, in a positive or negative way (approximately 300 words). 4. Describe all types of extra-professional activities in which you have been or are still involved for a significant amount of time (clubs, sports, music, arts, politics, etc.). How are you enriched by these activities? (approximately 300 words) 5. Is there anything else that was not covered in your application that you would like to share with the Admissions Committee? (approximately 300 words) (optional)
Recommendations The INSEAD application requires two letters of recommendation. Your references will have an online form to fill out. It is recommended that at least one of these letters of recommendation come from a workplace professional, ideally a supervisor. If your supervisor is unable to complete the recommendation, you may want to consider adding a reason as to why in your essay portion or in the additional information section of the application. The second recommender should be someone who knows you in a professional setting (a client or former supervisor, perhaps) and can speak to your professional practice and potential. The recommender’s section can be done either before or after you submit your application, as long as it is complete before the application deadline.
Curriculum Vitae A resume or CV is required and offers a suggested CV template on its website. INSEAD encourages the addition of a professional photo as well.
Other Application Requirements There are several additional portions of the INSEAD application of which to take note:
First, applicants must send all GMAT and GRE scores (i.e. all scores must be reported – not just the highest score – and scores from both tests must be reported if the applicant has taken both tests).
Second, because INSEAD values international insight and experience from its students, the INSEAD application will ask you to list your top three to six most significant examples of international exposure that you have experienced, living, studying, working, or travelling outside your own country. Similarly, you will have five spaces to select extracurricular activities you have been involved with and three spaces to list any honors or awards you have obtained.
Lastly, INSEAD has several areas in the final portion of the application to allow applicants to upload any additional letters or other documents that could be used to support the applicant’s candidacy. Use these spaces strategically!

Hi everyone,
I am sure all of you are anxious, busy and tensed while preparing for INSEAD's MBA application. These MBA applications are a good way to analyse one's strengths and weaknesses. It is a tough yet interesting time for each one of you which one will cherish throughout your lifetime once you reach the destination.
I started my journey on this path 2 years back; in the first year I received 100% rejections from 6 business schools and this year I have received 5 admits including 2 from top 5 business schools, 2 Ivy-leagues with scholarships and 1 from ISB. I was interviewed by 8 business schools this year including Harvard, Stanford, INSEAD and ISB.
I write to encourage all of you to not lose hope and be hopeful in this journey. I will be happy to help anyone who needs help in this process. I can be reached apoorvaj2712 (at) gmail.com
I look forward to interacting with interesting people here and getting to know an awesome bunch of you all.
