Hello,

Please evaluate my profile and give your valuable feedback.

Nationality- Indian
Undergrad- B.Tech. from NIT, Warangal
GMAT Score - 680 ( Q-48, V-35, AWA-5.5, IR-6)
Industry Experience - Energy/Renewable.

Work Exp: I am a 28 years old Male, presently associated with GE as Contract Specialist for Asia Pacific region. My past employer was L&T and MHI. I started my career with selling individual oil and gas/power plant equipment, and then moved on with turbine generator sets to individual EPC contractor ( India/other south Asian countries). Then I spend some time with business development and corporate strategy, where I was involved in discovering sustainable new business prospects as my company was looking for new field to expand its business (post 2013, when the power scenario in India was slowing down). Moving on, for the last 3 years, I am into contract and risk management - finalizing contracts, creating claim strategy, and so on. Total experience of 90 months by Aug/Sept'16.
( I could substantiate all of the above with figures/Order book status in my detailed application resume )

Post-MBA, I would either like to continue with my present organization ( In which case, I may get some sponsorship), or would like to move into Energy consulting.

Volunteer Experience/Extra Curricular:
1. Successfully set up an NGO with my Uncle in 2012 – mainly concentrating in providing education to the underprivileged. The NGO is based in West Bengal, India. My sole responsibilities, more specifically, range from fund raising to fund allocation in required departments, in consultation with the team members.
2. Associated with another NGO, run by a friend, working on providing education to the tribal people in remote locations in India. I have successfully raised funds of more 0.014 million USD. We are also working with them on entrepreneurship skills to make them self-reliant.

Target School: Yale, Fuqua, Rice (because its in Houston), INSEAD ( can arrange a recommendation from an INSEAD Alumni), HEC Paris(can arrange a recommendation from HEC Alumni) St. Gallen, Mannheim, Rotterdam, ESADE(can arrange a recommendation from an ESADE Alumni), HHL Leipzig and IESE. Please suggest any other business schools that fits my profile.

Hello there good sir,
So you have a very nice profile, with work experience and a strong industry, and graduation from one of the best schools in India. I think your main weakness will be your GMAT score, which for an Indian candidate is a bit low. Nevertheless I think your school list overall is pretty reasonable, as you have some difficult schools some competitive schools and maybe even one safe school.

So now all you have to do is get your story together, make amazing essays, and apply!
You could also consider retaking the GMAT if that is an option.

Hello Sir,

I went ahead and retook my GMAT and scored 720. I applied UCLA Anderson in R3 and got rejected.

There has not been much change in my profile, as mentioned above, except my promotion to Lead specialist at GE and my reconsideration of my target schools. At present, I am targeting Duke ( Early Action), for its strong foundation in Energy, along with Darden and Texas McCombs ( both in R1). How do you see my chances in the listed schools ?

In addition, I also have an offer from one of the Big4. So do job change at this juncture have any negative impact on my application?

Hello Sir,

Great to hear that you got a 720! That will help a lot.
And you shouldn't be surprised to have gotten a rejection letter from Anderson in R3 with a 680. If you still like the school though it would definitely make sense to try again.

I think your school list is a good start. Duke would be a bit challenging, and then Darden and then McCombs. I would definitely say you can apply for UCLA as well, and you might want to add another school or two to round off your list, but basically it is a good start.

Duke is my primary target because the concept of "Team Fuqua" and its collaborative environment really appeal me. Considering my demographics and my profile, with what score range I will be a bit safer - I can postpone my application from early action to R1 i.e. 10th October and consider retaking the test once again.

(Darden, UCLA Anderson and McCombs all have its R1 in October, so I still have some time to retake the test)

I feel that at this point, with a 720 you should be able to move forward, unless you are sure of your ability to get a higher score. Duke is the one school on your list that will be quite challenging, but the other schools should be within range, and would not necessarily necessitate a GMAT retake.

Obviously it is always better to have a better GMAT. But at some point you hit the turning point in the law of diminishing returns, and your time will be better spent on making your application rock!

Hello Sir,

I retook my GMAT and scored 760 ( I am yet to receive my official score report). I believe that an increase of 40 points will undoubtedly increase my chances. So, considering my profile, do you suggest any additional schools that I can include in my list - possibly Kellogg ?
