In a survey given to 100 participants at a small business convention last year 19 questions were asked and scored. 35 participants got scores of 80 or greater and 40 got scores of 40 or less and the remaining participants got the same score. If all participants submitted a survey and all surveys were scored, which of the following is true of the median score on the survey?

A. it is less than 35
B. it is less than 40
C. it is between 35 and 80
D. it is between 40 and 80
E. it is greater than 80

Hi Bunuel,
The 3 ranges are:
35 people scored <= 80 or 80
40 people scored >= 40
and 25 people got the same score.
The question doesn't mention the range of the score of the last category. How are we then assuming that their score would fall between 40 and 80 ?
New to stats and still struggling with it, please help.

Group 1: 35 participants got scores of 80 or greater;
Group 2: 40 participants got scores of 40 or less;

Group 3: the remaining 25 cannot have scores >=80 because they are not in group 1 and they cannot have scores <=40 because they are not in group 2. Thus they can only have scores from 40 to 80.
