Re: took the gmat yesterday (3/22/17) and scored 370, HELP [#permalink]
Hello EMPOWERgmatRichC,

Thank You for your prompt response, Sure
1) I began my studies one month ago and I've been studying more less 3 to 4 hours a day. But initially wanted to prolong my test however I missed the seven day deadline by day so instead of paying the $250, I decided to take the exam. So because I decided to prolong big Sam my mindset previously was not one of a serious/committed student.

2) in terms of materials I am somewhat blessed in the sense that I have the OG, verbal and quant review (seems like the verbal and Quan's books are the same thing that's in the OG), I purchased the old man package from GMAC, I have all the strategy guides for Manhattan prep and veritas prep, and I have a premium subscription to Magoosh GMAT. I also have the Kaplan advantage prep course and a friend lent me, and finally I have the NOVA GMAT Math Prep book.

3) this is where my carelessness is on display, because I was serious in the last six days I did not take any exams since I just decided to take the GMAT although I have a couple CAT's lying around. Unfortunately throughout the month I decided to take the GMAT, I did not take any CAT's

4) I plan to apply to business school later on this year when applications open up so say late 2017 with the intentions of going into business school next fall just give me enough time to study and achieve an elite score hopefully

5) Harvard, UChicago, Stern, Columbia, Lublin (Pace), Columbia, Penn State

Hello VeritasPrepKarishma,

Thank You for your prompt response. I have to strongly agree with you, I think I do not grasp the fundamentals which was evident when I started studying/tackling more complicated material and problems. Which subjects in high school Math/verbal do you recommend I take up? Also thank you for the link for the Veritas PREP website free resources. I have the strategy guides from the company but I do not know how to tackle them in a efficient manner, do you happen to have a schedule or study guide that will help me attack the study guides in an official manner? Do you have any recommendations for me? Thank you

Hi naija914,

Many Test Takers spend 3 months (or more) of consistent study time before they hit their 'peak' scores, so it's likely that you just have not put in enough time and effort yet to have scored higher. In addition, it's not clear how you were studying for this past month - if you did not end up taking any practice CATs, then your studies were likely a bit disorganized. Raising a 370 to a 700+ will be a big challenge - and you'll have to make significant improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections. You'll likely need at least another 3 months of consistent, guided study to hit that level - but you appear to have given yourself a lot of potential study time, which is good. Now that we have this 370 to use as a 'baseline' score, I suggest that you study as you like for the next 2-3 weeks, then take a FULL-LENGTH CAT (with the Essay and IR sections). That score will help to define whether your current approach to the GMAT is leading to improvement or not. Once you have that score, you should report back here and we can discuss how you might adjust your studies.

Hi Naija914,

I believe you may benefit from taking an additional course in Verbal. If you are willing, there are some great GMAT prep companies that can help you with your preparation.

In order to make an informed decision I would highly encourage you to go to their websites and try on their free trial and decide for yourself which one do you like better. Further I see you are a new member here at GMATCLUB and when you sign up at GMATCLUB you get a free 3 days access to EMPOWERgmat course. In fact it is the only way to get the deal which is very kool.

Further I would highly encourage you to consider e-gmat verbal online or the e-gmat verbal live course. They are both amazing courses especially designed for non-natives and they are both within your budget. They offer almost 25% of their courses for free so you can try out their free trial to decide which one you want to go for. Plus the e-gmat Scholaranium which is included in both the courses is one of the best verbal practice tools in the market. I must add that if you are particularly looking to discover and improve on your weak areas in quant; getting a subscription to GMATCLUB tests is the best way to do that. They are indeed phenomenal and will not only pinpoint your weak areas but also help you improve on them.

Lastly I would also encourage you to purchase the latest version of OG and the verbal review for some great additional practice. Here is a link that will help you with your decision.

Hope this helps. All the best.
