Re: ISB Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hello priitotos

You are more than just your grades and number of years of work ex.
ISB will be looking at your profile holistically, judging you on the following
1. Academics- Past scores + GMAT- if you get more than 710 you should be good to go, but it will depend highly on your written application.
2. Work Ex- More than number of years, company or role what has been your career progress and achievements?
3. Clarity of Goals- Why MBA? Why now? Why ISB? Unless you have really compelling answers to these questions in your application, you will not get an interview call.
Unless you provide this information, quality feedback will be tough.
All the best.

Hi priitotos,

Thanks for writing in.

You definitely have strong scores at the school level and a sound pedigree as well :-) This will definitely work in your favour.

Sure, the GPA is on the lower side but ISB will look at your application as a whole. Hence, to offset the low GPA, attempt to achieve a GMAT score that is definitely upwards of 720. This will not only help you move beyond the average GMAT score at ISB but also demonstrate your abilities to cope up with an academically rigorous program.

A more detailed evaluation is only possible when you share greater details about your profile including the exact nature of your job, achievements and accolades, as well as your career aspirations. Remember, to have a good chance, we need to put forth a set of essays that demonstrate your need for an MBA post a Master's qualification as well as portray a strong sync among your professional experience, short-term goals, and long term aspirations.

Hope this helps :-)

All the best!

Hello @knavnit90[

Thank you for the information, but it talks more about your 'stats' than 'quality'. I will be able to give limited feedback based on this.
ISB will judge your profile holistically on these parameters-

1. Acads- Look decent, a 710 will of course help. But still not stellar. Other elements of your profile will have to be strong as well (see below).
2. Work Ex- Your responsibilities look interesting, but ISB will be more interested in Career Progression and Achievements. You haven't mentioned much about it, so tough to give a deeper insight.
3. Diversity- You certainly have this going for you. ISB could gain from you as you could potentially bring a fresh perspective to your peers. But how you tie it in with your written application will make all the difference in the end.
4. Clarity of Goals- This is the most important aspect- Why MBA? Why Now? Why ISB? Unless you have compelling answers to these, AdCom will not invite you for an interview. This most critical information is missing to give you any feedback.
Lastly, if I'm not mistaken you have mentioned extracurricular during school. This is good, but ISB would also want to know extracurricular in college and post college. More importantly, what impact have you had in them.

Make sure all of the above ties well in your essays.

All the best.

Hi Prashant13,

Thanks for sharing your query.

Definitely, a lot working for you in terms of academic pedigree, promotions, and extra-curricular engagements. We are confident that if you are able to weave all of these together in an appropriate manner in your essays, you will be able to build for yourself a strong case.

Having said that, you have not shared the details of your GMAT score with us and hence it would be difficult for us to evaluate your profile in entirety. Moreover, while your goals align with your existing experience, they seem rather specific and may narrow your options post the PGP. Something like Operations Management is quite in sync and would be a lot more preferred (basically, a lot more recruiters would be hiring for operations roles :-)).

Hope this helped.

Re: ISB Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hello youmanjee

You have an interesting profile. ISB will look at your credentials holistically on these parameters-
1. Quality of Work Ex- You seem to have decent stories to tell. However, ISB will also be interested to know your accomplishments and career progression.
2. Academic Potential- Though your High School acads look good, your graduation and especially GMAT is a big worry. 580 will be tough. Try to cross 680 at least, and then you may have a good chance (provided you write a kick-ass application)
3. Clarity of Goals- You have not mentioned any reasons to why you wish to pursue an MBA and that too from ISB. This will be the most crucial factor.
4. Diversity- This seems to be your strongest point due to the combination of your work+industry+extracurricular. Choose your stories for essays wisely.
Needless to say the most evident aspect to improve in your profile is the GMAT.
Post that your success will depend on how well you write your essays.
All the best.

Re: ISB Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hello himbha93

This info is limited and one can give some generic feedback based on this. Understand that more than bullet points, ISB is more interested in the stories and achievements hidden in these points.
ISB will look at your profile holistically on the following parameters-
1. Academic Potential- Past scores + GMAT to show that you will be a good addition and will be able to handle the academic rigor. Your past scores look good, a 700+ GMAT will place you in a good position. But the importance of GMAT is limited, as the following factors will also matter.
2. Work Ex- You seem to have an interesting work ex, but you're talking about your role. The number of years is slightly on the lower side, so be prepared to give a strong reason to WHy MBA now? What are your key accomplishments? ISB wants to know that.
3. Clarity of Goals- Most important aspect, Why MB & Why ISB? More than anything the AdCom will judge you on your clarity, expectations and reasons to pursue an MBA. Your essays and interview will help you communicate this. Since you have not mentioned it is tough to say anything.
4. Diversity- You have this going for you. You could be a good addition to the class and add to the learning of your peers. But it will depend on how strongly you bring this out in your written application.
Overall I would say, you have a decent profile but 2 key elements will decide success (which are missing in the info provided)- GMAT- target 700+ and you Reasons for an MBA.
Needless to add how well you package this in your essays/application will be the deciding factor.
All the best.

XII: 78.6% (State Board)
B.Tech: 61.6% (NIT)

Work Exp. 4 years. Business Development in a Film Production Start-up. Responsibilities included Client negotiation, Client handling, Team management, end-to-end management of various video production activities, Delivering finished product to the client within tight deadlines etc.

Target GMAT score: 720+
Extra Curricular: Above average.

Please tell me whether my profile is good enough for ISB. I am particularly worried about my Grad score.

Hi debsnitd,

Thanks for posting your query.

First things first, what works for you is that barring your graduation scores, you seem to have been a high performer academically. The low score in graduation can, to a large extent, be offset by a higher GMAT score and 720 is a fine score to be aiming for. Of course, higher the better :-) To add to this, your diverse background (in a film-production start-up) will help you stand out in the applicant pool and will give you some advantage. However, we do not have too many details of your achievements, leadership abilities, and exact nature of the job, to make a detailed evaluation.

Moving beyond the above, the ISB application will also depend on how well you portray your need for an MBA, as well as how you present a strong sync between your existing experience and future goals. The extra-curricular activities too will be important in projecting you as an all-around individual.

Hope this helped :-)

Hello priitotos,

While you have fantastic scores at the school-level, your CGPA at college is definitely on the lower side. That should not, however, deter you from applying to ISB :-) Look to score upwards of 720 on the GMAT and you should be able to offset your low GPA to a large extent. Of course, how well you demonstrate your strengths, explain your need for an MBA, and showcase your career goals in your essays will also play an important role in determining your case.

Should you have any follow up questions, feel free to write to us :-)

Hi oneMBAcoach

Kindly evaluate my profile too.

My profile:

Age/ Gender/ Nationality: 26/ Male/ Indian

Education: BE Mech with a cgpa of 7.7/10 (non-IIT NIT)/ 12th - 90%/ 10th - 90%

Work Experience: Almost 4.5 years as a mechanical engineer in a private engineering services company without any promotion, as that system is skewed here. No accomplishments at all as I just work for the money, hating the job day in and day out.

Extra curriculars: Was active in street plays during college for which I have won prizes. Planning to get into theater part time now. Also some sporadic volunteer activities that involved creating environmental awareness to kids in schools through plays, organising cultural events for kids from orphanages throughout the city etc.

GMAT: Yet to take, but scored 630 in both MGMAT and Experts Global free tests without much practice, so with some solid prep I think I might score close to 700.

Good past Acad scores. Target 700+ in GMAT. After this everything will depend on your written application.

Work Experience: Almost 4.5 years as a mechanical engineer in a private engineering services company without any promotion, as that system is skewed here. No accomplishments at all as I just work for the money, hating the job day in and day out.
Without details of your achievements, leadership abilities, and exact nature of the job, it is impossible to make a detailed evaluation.
And now my friend time for some brutal feedback- this attitude will not get you into ISB or any other good B-School for that matter. We all have achievements at work, even if we are not very fond of our jobs. Achievements are not just a promotion, maybe you handled a project single-handed, or solved some unique problems. You need to sit down and spend time fleshing these out. Otherwise your written applications/essays will lack depth. FYI- essays are the most important aspect of an application- more important than GMAT. If you need help, we can begin a discussion.

Extra curriculars: Was active in street plays during college for which I have won prizes. Planning to get into theater part time now. Also some sporadic volunteer activities that involved creating environmental awareness to kids in schools through plays, organising cultural events for kids from orphanages throughout the city etc.
These look interesting and can make for brilliant stores in the essays. ISB would like to know your impact in these activities.

GMAT: Yet to take, but scored 630 in both MGMAT and Experts Global free tests without much practice, so with some solid prep I think I might score close to 700. Target at least 700. Higher the better. Will not guarantee your success, as need more info on work front.

Post MBA: Finance/ General management These are 2 very different fields. Be clear which is your no. 1 priority. More importantly WHY Finance/GM. How will MBA help? S=Specifically how will ISB help? How does your current experience tie in with your future goals? How will MBA help you achieve this goal? These are essential questions, which ISB will grill you in your essays/interviews. You have a good chance if you have compelling answers to these.

As I said info is limited, this is the best possible feedback I can give.

Thank you
