I am applying to part time programs at Boston University and Boston College very late in R3. I wanted some feedback on how strong of a candidate I am...

Age: 25
3 years of solid work experience
3.1 GPA at a top 30 Liberal Arts college, but with a humanities major and very little quantitative coursework.
Varsity athlete and captain of my team
640 GMAT - 41 Quant. 35 Verbal. (haven't gotten AWA scores back, but I'm sure I got at least 5's on them)
Strong letters of Rec. and solid essays

If this was an earlier round then I'd say I have a good shot at both, but because this is round 3 I wasn't sure what my chances are. Anyone with any insight into the difficulty of round 3 admissions?

What do you do at work? Is your job quant-related?

Either way, I think you'll have a shot at both schools, even for round 3. Seeing how you're more or less a non-traditional applicant, you might just be the person the schools are looking for. Obviously, BU is going to be a bit harder to get in the Boston College, but if you're aiming for this year, go for it. If anything, you're young and you still have time next year to reapply to those and some other colleges.

Thanks for the advice. I am planning to apply, but have thought about waiting for next year only for the benefit of potentially looser admissions requirements.

When you say I'm not a traditional applicant are you just refering to my extra curriculars? Other than that, I would consider myself to be a very traditional candidate - 3 years out of school, just below average GPA and just above average GMAT...

I work in the legal field, but moreso in a quantitative capacity than legal. I believe my work experience is very strong compared to most applicants my age.

It was the "3.1 GPA at a top 30 Liberal Arts college, but with a humanities major and very little quantitative coursework." that threw me into the non-traditional aspect of things.

To be honest with you, given your varsity (captain) experience, schools will value that a lot, especially if it's a D1 school. Is there a particular reason as to why part-time programs, and why Boston only? I don't mean to pry and if it's something personal to you, that's fine and well. However, with a higher GMAT score (700+), you can easily aim for a top 20 full-time MBA program in the states. Just a thought. :-D

I have a unique situation where I will get a large percentage of my tuition reimbursed if I continue to work full-time while getting my MBA. At this point though, I have nothing in writing and if they were to rescind this arrangement I will certainly look into full-time programs.

Unfortunately, raising my GMAT score from a 640 to 700+ is easier said than done....

totally understand about the GMAT issue (it truly is easier said than done).
