Hi,
I am looking to further get into Real Estate Development post-MBA.

Black Male

Undergrad school:
University of Virginia BA in Economics
GPA 2.9

GMAT 710

Work Experience:
1 year interning on Capitol Hill. Biggest accomplishment was being able to plan and be apart of an outreach event through the White House Office of Public Engagement.

2 years working at Morgan Stanley in the Operations division of the Institution Securities Group.

Took a 3 courses through the Urban Land Institute to receive a certificate in Real Estate Development.

3 years as a Development Analyst at a prominent Washington D.C. based real estate private equity company.

I am going to apply to these schools: Harvard, Wharton, Chicago, Tuck, Columbia, Duke, Darden, Michigan, NYU, Georgetown and UMD-Smith.

Thanks

Only thing I would say is to cut down on the number of schools. You want to apply to enough schools as it is a numbers game, but you don't want to overdo it or else you'll dilute your efforts across too many schools. Ideal number is around 5-6 schools.

Choose 2-3 stretches: Harvard, Wharton, Chicago, Tuck, Columbia (Harvard/Wharton/Tuck if you're looking for non-finance careers, Wharton/Chicago/Columbia if you're looking for finance)

Choose 2-3 sweet spots: Duke, Darden, Michigan, NYU (Duke/Darden/Michigan for non-finance careers, NYU/Cornell/Yale for finance careers)

Choose 0-1 safeties: Georgetown and UMD-Smith.

Thanks. Also I had one more question. My position with Morgan Stanley was in the operations division which is considered "back office". Does that look less favorably or does that not matter?
Thanks for all the help.

Back office isn't seen in the same light as front office, but there's nothing you can do about that.

All you can do is focus on doing the best you can on the applications, and highlighting what you feel you can bring to the table.

I tend to use a basketball analogy (which some of you probably have heard already): it's like height to basketball. Yes, being tall is important, and if you are shorter than the typical player, there's nothing you can do about it other than playing ball to the best of your ability and letting the chips fall where they may.
