The key to a killer profile is weaving a thread of intentionality throughout towards a logical career vision going forward. Sounds like you have some regrets, but can still perhaps build a story compelling enough to earn you a slot in a top 10 school. Certainly charisma and a winsome personality can help in an interview, but other than Duke, I don't know of schools on your short list who let you come interview without an invitation. So how do you get that coveted invitation? Grabbing their attention with your application by standing out from the crowd. You will automatically be in a small bucket of applicants with a History degree, but as you indicated, your rather disjointed career progression may communicate that you don't know what you want to do. The fact you did not lay out your post MBA plans in your post also tells me you may not have fully decided yet what you want to do to leverage an MBA. This last point is most critical and not one you want the adcoms to pick up on. Particualrly the elite schools hate to see applicants who haven't quite figured themselves out and want to hide in the program for two years to find themselves. Not saying this is you, just pointing out that you don't want to be that person. Easy way to get invited to apply again next year. See if you can come up with a plan which will fully leverage your past experience and make sure you can speak to why your target schools can specifically help get you there. THis should help orient your application in the right direction. Check it for an equal measure of demonstrating maturity, innovation/creativity, teamwork and leadership and you should be able to get some invitations.
