Hi there - thanks for writing! You have a good GPA and distinctive work experience. GMAT will be very important - as an Indian applicant to top schools, I advise that you aim for a 730+ to distinguish yourself from other applicants. Also, in your applications, make a strong case for why Tuck is a good fit based on its culture and offerings - this will require thoroughly researching the school and speaking with multiple students/alumni (who are very receptive to prospective student outreach).

Hope that helps a bit! Feel free to follow up with any additional questions.

Hello All,
I would like to have my profile evaluated. I just took the GMAT in June and am ready to apply for business school in Fall 2019. Here is my information:
GMAT: 710 (50Q/34V/6 IR) Have not received my AWA score yet
GPA: ~ 3.37 (over a 3.5 my last year)
Degree: BA Economics, UCLA. Transfer GPA - 3.8
Experience: 2 years as an analyst at a real estate investment company(1 year at current firm). Work in both acquisitions (acquired 3 hotels for $150mm since I started) and asset management (6 of our current hotels, and 135 hotels for a third party). Had previous internship experience in PWM.
Extracurricular: Over 700 hours working as a volunteer at the local hospital, as a tutor, and as a coach for middle school children. No experience in professional leadership/managerial roles. Was a member of Ski and Snowboard team in college. Mentor a student at UCLA. High School Valedictorian.
Background: Indian (born and raised in California). 25 years old. Typical middle class story for a kid in Orange County.
What I want from business school: First, I would like to work in finance, either in real estate acquisitions, PWM, or VC/PE. I would like to gain both the professional and personal skills that business school can provide. Finally, I need a change in my life.
Letters of Rec: Plan on asking my CIO and an Associate at my current company for my two recommendations. I also have my previous employer in case. Do not have a professor at UCLA I can ask since I did not spend a lot of time in office hours.
Other: The one issue which will make things difficult is that I was accused of cheating in college. I received academic probation and I'm sure I will have to discuss what happened. I would like some feedback whether this is a automatic red flag. It was a mistake and I've grown from it, but I am sure it will leave a mark.

Thank You,

Community: Volunteer at a local children's hospital once a week

Hi GMatpercher,

I am missing more details here that will make your profile easier to understand. What has your career growth been like? what impact have you made at both your organizations? how was your performance compared to peers? And what drives you to do an MBA from the b-schools you have mentioned in your different posts?

Hi there - thanks for writing. It looks like you have some strengths to your profile - excellent GPA and career progression so far.

While a 720 is solid, given how competitive things are for Indian applicants, is increasing the GMAT score by 10+ points a possibility? If so, try your best as this could help competitively. Also, are you involved in any current extracurriculars? AdCom does take college involvement into account, but the strongest applicants have current involvement in outside pursuits as well.

Aside from this, you want to make a very strong case in your application for 1. why Tuck is a strong fit based on its unique culture and location, small class size, and resources and 2. why consulting is the path for you - what motivates you?

Hope that helps a bit! :)

Hello - thanks in advance to anyone who will be willing to evaluate my profile. After visiting Tuck in the spring, I am very excited to apply this fall.

Background: Applying R1 for Fall 2019 start
Race: Asian, US citizen
Male, 28 years old

GMAT: 720 (47Q, 42V, not my best performance)
Undergrad: Top 100 state university (top 30ish out of publics)
Major: Finance
GPA: 3.3 (prioritized extracurricular commitments in college)

Work experience:
3 years in financial administration years with 1 major promotion (and management experience. Responsible for financial tracking, internal analysis, and collaborating with senior management to optimize budget and financial processes. In terms of my own development in this job, I went from primarily budget preparation and writing proposals to leading discussion with management on broader financial strategy and client relationships, and being point person to management for status updates.

Currently going into my 4th year co-leading the finance arm within the education sector. Responsible for managing all internal financial processes, applying to grant funding, and working with stakeholders that currently fund us. I've also spearheaded a strategic plan for pursuing funding so that we are now better equipped for grant applications and am now managing our consulting partnership to visualize and later
execute a 5 year plan (we have a consulting firm that has been hired on to help us).

Extracurricular:
Student government leader
Fraternity council president (leadership above all fraternities on campus)
Appointed to several leadership honor societies and student positions by my university
Post-college I was an alumni representative, career mentor to college students, tutor to local high school students, nothing spectacular

Post MBA: Strategy consulting, with a preference to firms that have solid social/public sector clients, but not a hard preference. Basically to be on the other side of table in the major project that I'm managing.

I would suggest you to have GMAT score above 750. Tuck has an avg GMAT of 730+. You being an Indian applicant, competition will be far tough for you. Additionally, I feel your experience is not sufficient. Generally, people going to Tuck have 5+ years of experience.

Hello everyone - thanks in advance

Hello everyone - thanks in advance for any insight!

Worked for the company in rural India serving the rural consumer.
well aware with socioeconomic condition of rural India. Handled a team of 8 people (only for six months)
Recs/stories -

After completion of MBA, want to bring many such models into practice.

-Motivated other people to join the organization.
Played a flute in band of the organization.

Want to join the tuck because -
it has strong emphasis on community.
Want to nurture leadership to start a social enterprise
( Met with tuck alumni who started community based travel service. )
Tuck is only one of the few institutes who has focus on India

To be frank, your profile is too weak for Tuck. Your GMAT is very low (Tuck avg 730+), your age is a negative factor, your work experience is vague and does not convey any achievement. "After completion of MBA, want to bring many such models into practice." ... why you need MBA for that? Vague and very shallow profile for Tuck. With 670 as GMAT I would recommend you to aim for colleges in 30+ ranks. It seems you have underestimated the competition at Tuck

Undergrad: Btech Civil, from 5th ranking National institute of Technology, with CGPA 9.15/10

Work experience: Employed in India's premium Oil &Gas Consultancy (a Public sector undertaking) since 2012 (work exp of 5 yrs)

The entire work exp can be broken down into 2 parts :
1. Construction site experience
a. Posted for 1 year at the esteemed site for Strategic storage of Crude oil (at Mangalore India) wherein facilities were being constructed to store crude in underground caverns. Job responsibilities included contract handling, site inspection (including inspection in underground rock caverns) , quality control, implementation of safety at site.
b. Posted for 1.5 years at a refinery expansion project ( Kochi, India) wherein entrusted with the civil structural works for the important Crude distillation unit of refinery. Job responsibilities included preparation of a green field site, handling of a contract amounting to 35 million USD which involved leading a team of 15 persons, site inspection, progress monitoring & expediting, material inspection within & outside site, billing ( completed billing of the value of 14 million USD) quality control.

I don't have any on site International job experience.

GMAT: yet to be taken but targeting a score of 740 to 750

Extracurricular: Not much to show. Have received professional training in Harmonium ( completed 4 professional exams), actively performed in various cultural activities during schooling, during college my team was one among the top 3 teams of west India in the INSDAG competition( an all India competition for steel design)

Post MBA goal : I want to shift from Oil & gas industry ( as all countries are moving from oil towards more environmental friendly options) and enter into strategy consulting and have an inclination to enter into M&A roles ( would explain more efficiently while writing my essays)

Havard & Stanford I believe are too high an expectation given my normal profile. Whether I would be fit for Columbia, Kellog, Yale or Ross?

Once again thank you for your help.

Your profile is fine. Columbia and Ross are very selective schools. You need very good GMAT score, 750+ atleast and you need to reword your application. Include measurables in your application and don't include vague things. If you can make a strong application with 750+ GMAT, I think you have chance. Also, try aiming for schools in 15+ ranks where you stand more chance.

Hello,

Do I stand a realistic chance of getting in? My profile:

1.) Indian Female, 24, Muslim
2.) GMAT: 730 (q50, v39, IR-3( I know it's bad!), AWA-6.0)
3.) Undergrad: Engineering , GPA: 4.0 (according to MBA.com conversion table)
4.) Currently working at Dell Technologies, 2 years of work experience after graduating. (Will be 3 yrs before joining the school)

International work experience: YES (was one of the select few to attend the Dell Annual IT Summit at Austin and learnt a lot from the experience)

I joined my team as a software analyst but my manager seeing good management and communication skills in me, encouraged me to take up project management and thus I became a project coordinator for my team within 6 months of joining the company. I worked with my team to do anything possible to help them perform at their highest level. This involves removing any impediments to progress, communicating with other teams for requirements, etc. So, you might say I have managing experience as well. I was a Scrum Master for my team and I have a certification of Certified Scrum Master as well.

5.) Extra-curricular: Vocalist in college band and still sing sometimes at clubs, worked with NGOs to help educate poor muslim girls, blogging, modelling, travelling

I was also the networking lead in the IT Development Program in Dell. I have organised numerous events and led all the members(in numbers of 50-60) of the ITDP program on various occasions.

Post MBA goals: Product Marketing Manager in a company I believe in.
Long term goals: Chief Marketing officer , again in a company I believe in.

Please give an honest feedback if I have a shot at getting in. And if not, which schools do you suggest me to apply to?

Thanks a bunch!!

Hi Tasneem,
you've got a "nice" profile. However to stand out in the super competitive admissions process, specially as a younger applicant, you will have to demonstrate a few abilities through your application: 1. your leadership potential, 2. achievements and impact you have made on your company, 3. your passion to achieve something meaningful out of your career and sound career goals (yours seem realistic) and 4. the burning need for an MBA.

Your extracurriculars are a little light. I'd focus on those activities, where you went beyond yourself and helped others - it could be educating Muslim girls and helping them become independent/ breaking stereotypes in parents' minds.

You have posted on several threads and I see you are aiming at the top ones only. I'd recommend you add a few more b-schools to your list, where you have a more realistic shot.

I'd be happy to look at your profile in more detail. Feel free to share your resume on the email address given in my signature

First of all thank you for taking the time to read our profiles, it really means a lot to us!

My profile is definitely on the more unconventional side when it comes to applicants, but I hope that doesn't make it impossible for you to evaluate it. I'm especially keen to hear your thoughts on my master's education (more information below). With my work experience I'm intentionally pedantic to provide a full picture so you can understand my path and my motivation better. Of course not going to this much detail in my resume :-)

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Age: Turning 29

Race: Caucasian

Gender: Male

Nationality: Finland - There is less than 5 Finnish Tuck Alumni. Finns VERY rarely leave their country for education due to it being free and high quality and usually when they do they go to other European countries. I'm not sure if this works to my benefit or to my disadvantage, but thought I'd bring it up that I am almost certainly the only Finn applying to Tuck this year.

Living in: Central Europe (I'm an expat with years of international experience)

Education:

- Bachelor of Military Science from Finnish National Defense University (Equivalent of Westpoint) (2010-2013). Majored in Strategy, minored in Leadership studies. GPA is impossible to translate to American GPA, but I was above average (top 40%)

- ALMOST completed Master of Business Intelligence and Information Management (International Business) at a well known Central European University. I've completed all my course work back in 2016, but never defended my thesis and therefore have NOT officially graduated. GPA from the classes I took are slightly above average once again. Also took some courses at Harvard during the summer, they are all graded as A's.

NOTE: I have a VERY good reason for not finishing my master's studies, but it is too personal to write here. I will explain it to the adcoms of course.

GMAT: 740 with very strong verbal

Work experience: (from oldest to current)

- 6 years in the Finnish military, which off approximately 2 years can be counted as work experience (rest was training). Specialized in Logistics. Retired in 2014 with the rank of Lieuetenant. In my last role I

•Lead, trained and supervised a group of 25-35 men. During bootcamp periods (4 months per year) the number was 100 men.
•Responsible for training the Logistics company's leadership and mission control as well as other supporting components. Also trained troops going into Afghanistan and Chad.
•Was in charge of training the logistics battalion's personnel to use the newly implemented logistic management system. I was the only one in the brigade trained to operate the new logistics HQ at the time.

- After retiring as an Army Officer, I worked as a COO for a CPG-startup. In the approximately 1,5 years I worked in this capacity I was

• Responsible for the operational integrity of the production facilities.
• Maintaining effective production rates, end-to-end supply chain management
• Negotiating sub-contractor deals, finding new sales channels

- Currently working for a major, global energy company (think Exxon Mobil, Shell, Total....). I have been with the company for a bit over 2 years as I'm writing this. I have been in three roles with all of them having similarities to one another in the sense that each focus on managing innovation. Paired with my studies in Business Intelligence, I have succesfully translated my background in Leadership and operations to a rewarding and challenging career in IT Innovation space.

• In my first role I redesigned our Upstream-businesses Innovation Delivery Funnel, identifying 16 targets for improvement ranging from managing our processes to improving governance and how we replicate success internally across our different lines of business.

• In my second role I worked as a ''bridge'' between the IT innovation and the business - Negotiating a buy-in and then helping the business to implement new IT innovation (specifically Information Management) that would bring them business value. I had many interesting projects, but the biggest impact I had with a project related to SharePoint where a total landscape restructure through a new solution helped the business improve their performance in almost all of their key performance indicators and saved them over 2 million dollars.

• In my current role that I started in June, I am working as an IT Advisor in my company's Downstream Retail business. Specifically I work in a team that manages our Global Payment Solutions portfolio - Any project that has to do with how we manage the payment landscape of our thousands of facilities across the globe will come to our desk. My job is to focus on the strategy; How can we build a future landscape that is sustainable, agile and fully enables us to use our data to the fullest of potential (data analytics).

Extracurriculars:

Plans for after school

Short-term I would like to continue in the Innovation Management space and transition into pure tech (think Google, Microsoft etc.). A logical and realistic path for me given my work experience is in the product management side and work my way up from there.

Long term (in 15-20 years) I would like to found my own non-profit organisation that focuses on localized infrastructural makeovers in poor communities - Reshaping the district education system, road and utility infrastructure, local entrepeneurship etc. I have a very detailed elaborate plan, but I feel I'd probably distract you (and the adcoms) too much if I began to open up about it now.

Want to join the Tuck because

- Ever since I began researching the schools years ago, I have had a very special place in my heart reserved for Tuck. They really seem to emphasize the importance of self-reflection, humility and personal integrity. The community seems extremely collaborative and warm and the access to staff (and very helpful and enthusiastic alumni) only made it easier for me to know it is my dream school. Genuine kindness and selflessness is rare and to me any business school that encourages their students to exhibit such behavior is immediately on my good side.

- I'm also an avid hiker and a nature lover, hiking more than a 1000km a year. Knowing I'd have ample access to beautiful nature is a massive plus. I even have plans to hike the ENTIRE APPALACHIAN TRAIL in 100 days prior to starting the program should I get accepted :-)

Hope I didn't bore you with my profile! :-)

Hi Captain Ivy,

Possibly the Finnish are just too happy being in the happiest country in the world and therefore, they never want to leave. But the Tuckies are a bunch of "NICE" folks, and together, you guys could create an awesome Tuck community. Puns aside, I really mean this :-). Adcoms try to bring together a diverse class, and as your country's only (or one among a few) representative, you will definitely satisfy this need.
Moreover, your military experience sounds quite outstanding. Army veterans are heartily welcomed at b-schools for the leadership skills they bring. Tuck has a webpage dedicated to them. Have a look and see if you find something useful: http://www.tuck.dartmouth.edu/mba/life-at-tuck/military

Your current experience in the energy company sounds varied, and you have also achieved some outstanding results. Now its your onus to tie it all together and link it to your career goals. While you can make the connections with the short term goal, I find your long term goals out of sync. Why should you have to wait for the long term to start a non profit? If you are passionate about it, you could do it on the side even now. This will not convince the adcoms either. You definitely need to think further and slign your long term goals with what you will do in the short term.

Your short term goals are a preparation for the long term goals, which are aspirational in nature and can be achieved only by taking certain steps NOW. An MBA is the first one, and the short term/ mid term goals are the other step that help you gain the experience you will require to achieve your long-term position. Therefore there has to be a connect between them.

Also, do research Tuck further to understand how it will benefit you academically, culturally, and career wise.

Hi Izulman,
I find your profile quite competitive for the top programs such as Tuck. I see that you were present on the forum even last year and have managed to increase your GMAt score to 720. A more competitive GMAT score and a solid application will be the key to admissions.
Now I see a lot of achievements and impact in your profile. You have also worked on some strategically important projects for your companies, which is great exposure and something adcoms desire in applicants. Every b-school wants to be assured that you, the MBA student, will contribute to their class. Your contributions will be most valuable when your experiences are rich and have depth. In the application, you will need to communicate these experiences in the most impressive way via your essays, resume and recos.
Looking at your career goals, I am not sure where they come from. They are probably an offshoot from your volunteering experience. However, I have a word of caution here. You have rich experience in the TMT sector. Why would you not leverage that in your career goals? And why do you need an MBA for the goals stated above? Last year your goals were around product management. This year they are around working with the government. May I ask why is there such a big change? I fear you are trying to stand out with differentiated career goals, but that's never a good strategy unless you really believe in these and can convince the adcom through the work you have done in this space, that these are not fanciful goals.
I could have suggestions for b-schools, but those would depend largely on where you wish to work post MBA.
