Hi manvivarma,

I would say in my view Fuqua is a reach for you with just 2 years of experience thus far (though would be 3 at matriculation) and a 3.3 GPA; that said sounds like you can make a strong case for the qualify of your experience outweighing the quantity which is great. The more examples of leadership you have, both inside and outside of work, the more that will help also, and recommendations could be key here to make a stronger case that you are ready for this step etc. Finally connecting well with Fuqua can help; showing you know the program well etc. I feel there could be a shot but it's less clear, tougher to predict, but worth trying if you are up for it. (Side note if happen to be female I would say that will help some). If you tried this year and it did not work out, then as a reapplicant next year with more experience and leadership I would be optimistic. If you start working asap you should have time for R2 deadlines. Good luck either way!

Intake Year: 2019

Pre-MBA Career: Public Relations and Communications
Post-MBA Career: Consumer Goods (Marketing and Brand Management)
GMAT: 710
GPA: 3.3
Years of Work Experience: 2

Notes: My GMAT score breakdown is: (710- Q: 49 and V: 38).

A brief on my background: I have worked for two years in a top-notch international PR and Communications agency (post my under-grad) in Mumbai and served a plethora of MNCs and large scale conglomerates across corporate and consumer verticals in those two years. I was among the youngest people at the agency and was promoted within a year of working there. I have also actively helped in crisis and reputation management for one of the largest corporate crisis in India during my stint at the agency, and truly believe that my quality of work experience has been great over the past two years.

I specialised in PR during my undergrad and carried out five internships successfully during the same time. Three at non-profit organizations and two at industry-specific agencies. Through school, college and work, I have always taken up roles of responsibility and leadership, actively looked out for and asked for opportunities and always showcased the urge to learn.

Additionally, I have always actively participated in extra-curriculars at school and college and performed extremely well academically. I would like to do an MBA with a major in marketing, from a top B-school in the US specifically, so as to add to my experience of PR and communications and achieve concentric growth around my core competencies. Furthermore, coming from a advertising and PR background, I have a fair understanding of the changing communication landscape and would like to deep dive into understanding brand management, disruptive marketing and ways to break through the current clutter to create an impact or spearhead behavioural change.

That aside, in the long run I would like to join the C-suite of an MNC, lead from the forefront and create a lasting impact on the society using my position. However, to get there, I do believe that it is important for me to venture out into relatively new territories for me, i.e. finance, accounting, sustainability, micro-economics and macroeconomics among the others. Hence the MBA.

Furthermore, why the MBA now? Well, because I want to make the switch from the agency side to the corporate side now, and no better way to bridge the gap than do an MBA that would provide me with a holistic understanding of the other side, before I step into it.

Starting today, I have about 50 days till the round 2 deadline to get my essays in place. Does Fuqua seem like a good option and what are my chances basis my profile?

Hello garima5

Though your work profile is quite different from most Indian applicants, the GMAT score is going to be a major hindrance for the like of Duke.
Other aspects seem strong though, work ex, extracurricular. However, with ~2 years of experience you are going to be on the lower end. This means competing with applicants who have worked in the industry for longer and due to that reason Might have better career progress/ achievements. That means it might be difficult for you to stand out on basis of your professional profile as well. That clubbed with this GMAT score can be a big problem.
Apart from a strong reason as to 'WHY MBA Now' I'd recommend a retake if you are serious about Duke. You may want to read here on what makes a strong profile.

Though it is not, but if you are not really applying to a school and getting yourself evaluated anyway, it's a waste of resources.

Hi, it is absolutely safe to apply to Fuqua with any profile because they give an application fee waiver and so it's no harm in applying there.
For your profile, I think it is strong. The quantity of work experience and volunteering during undergraduate education seems strong, just be sure that the quality is strong too.

Give it a shot. Don't forget to ask for application fee waiver. If you attend a webinar, you'll get the waiver. For more information, visit the website or e-mail them.

Here's what a top MBA program's Admissions Committee expects from a male Indian engineer: top GMAT scores, good GPA, strong tech experience, has some extracurricular experience either playing cricket (maybe even a team captain) or volunteering at a local non-profit. Typical career goal: get a position at a top tech company / start a tech company of your own. Personality: structured, analytical, driven, hard working. Perceived risks: numbers-oriented, not very creative, perhaps not the strongest personal skills.

To be successful in your MBA application process you should focus on the aspects of your profile that are NOT what the AdCom expect. What have you done that other male Indian engineers haven't? How are you different? How do your hobbies, personality, career goals, experience, etc. stand out? How can you convince them that you are not "guilty" of the aforementioned perceived weaknesses?

Also, I personally heard a top Fuqua admissions officer advise an Indian engineer to try to position himself as an international candidate as opposed to an Indian candidate (play up your international experience, if you think that makes sense).

Source of info: lots of MBA research, got admitted to Fuqua, plus, many discussions with male Indian engineer friends.

I can't really see the full picture but good academics, interesting work experience. Do you have solid regular volunteer experience? My concerns are the GMAT: yes Peruvians are underrepresented, but 650 is on the very lowest end of their 80% GMAT range. If you can pull out 20 more points I would be a lot more optimistic. Many do not realize this but Duke is actually a very international oriented program so your lack of experience there might be to some detriment. If you are determined - research the School. Touch MBA podcast, watch YT vids, subscribe to their newsletter and speak with alumni. Show a ton of interest and fit their ethos. One last thing - why do you need an MBA? You are already in PE which is the ideal MBA goal for many. So you will need to come up with something good there. I think partnering with someone on your apps would be wise

I am a graduate from a canadian univetsity, one of the schools the has the toughest grading system e.g. McGill, U of T.

I am quite concerned due to my low gpa which is 3.2.
First Year: 3.7
Second Year: 2.08 with an F, C+, B-s, 3.3
Third Year: 3.2
Fourth Year: 3.2

My gmat score is 730 and I am a Canadian CPA working at PwC’s audit department.
CFA lvl2

Should I apply as a Canadian citizen or Korean citizen?

Will the admission committee take into consideration that I am from one of the toughest school from Canada that gives really low grades?
