Re: Fuqua Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Great thread. Thanks for taking the time to do this. See my profile below:

-26 year old white male (US)
-3.16 GPA in accounting from a liberal arts school. I got horrible grades my first two years as I was doing a Marine Corps officer training program that only mandated I maintain a 2.0. I completed the training but realized the military was not what I wanted to do with my life, had an "oh crap" moment and started taking school seriously, brought my GPA from about a 2.5 to the 3.16 with a major GPA of 3.6. I plan to write an additional essay about this.
-780 GMAT (50Q/47V)
-Licensed CPA
-Started my career in Big 4 audit, received great ratings and will have a solid recommendation from a former mentor there
-After 2 years of audit, switched to the transaction advisory services group of another firm which is my current job. Doing financial due diligence on middle-market deals ranging from $50 million to $300 million, mainly in the healthcare/biotech space but experience across a variety of industries. The job is a good mix of business operations and finance focus which I will stress in my essays. I've been at the current job roughly 14 months and was just promoted to Manager which is two years earlier than normal manager-level promotions. Will receive another great recommendation from my current supervisor.
-Extracurriculars include Junior Achievement volunteering for the last two years (going to elementary/middle schools and teaching kids about personal finance), national competition-level men's rugby, and currently trying to get on the board of a local education-focused nonprofit. I know the nonprofit thing might seem like I just tried to add something last minute to throw on the resume but it's a cause I actually care about and the opportunity just surfaced.
-ST Goal is to switch to the other side of the deal table and join a large investment bank, ideally in the healthcare division. I've had some great experiences being part of the m&a process through the deals I've done in TAS and I think that skillset could transfer well to IB. I also have a great network from working with several banks and PE firms on deals.
-LT Goal is to take what I learned from IB and transition to a healthcare-focused PE/VC

Would love any feedback on my strengths, gaps, and perceptive likelihood of acceptance. Plan to apply R1.

- 710 GMAT (48Q/40V/8IR/6AWA)
- 3.42 GPA (upward trending - 3.0 first year, 3.8 fourth year)
- Undergraduate degree in Economics from UVA
- Work experience includes 4 years (will be 5 when leaving for b-school) in Technology consulting, doing mainly systems engineering in the healthcare industry, for a Big-4 consulting firm
- Currently applying to secure company sponsorship with a return offer prior to applying to school
- Outside of client work, also involved with undergraduate recruiting, internal innovation competitions, a mentorship program for new hires, and experience working on two successful business development efforts
- Extracurriculars: coach a local little league baseball team and support my significant other's small business as the logistical/business support. Founded a mental health support organization during undergrad and held two executive positions in my Fraternity.
- My b-school story is likely going to be focused around the development of my passion for the healthcare industry in my four years in consulting and how I want to leverage the experiences gained from an MBA as well as schools with healthcare concentrations/majors to eventually be in a position to drive healthcare innovation for the benefit of the patient. I will likely be returning to my consulting firm post-MBA in order to honor my sponsorship and receive reimbursement but would eventually like to be working for either a large healthcare device company or a tech firm in their healthcare department with a focus in operations/management.

Your story as it relates to your goals makes a lot of sense, particularly because you show some interest in healthcare since college. I can't speak to your chances, and frankly, no one here can. My advice would be to apply EA if you really desire to go to Fuqua, as their strength in healthcare aligns perfectly with your goals. Good luck!

Thank you so much for offering! Any guidance is appreciated. I'm considering applying ED

Demographic: 26 year old American white straight male. Fluent in English and nearly fluent in German

GMAT: 700 (48Q/38V/6AWA/7IR)

Undergrad: 3.2 in math from top 25 school (it's one of Johns Hopkins, Tufts, Emory, Rice)

Work experience: 4 years (5 when matriculate) at a well known tech company in New York City (think Spotify, Jet, Grub Hub) in biz dev. Promoted twice

Leadership: Captain of college tennis team, member of varsity squash team. Manage direct reports in role. Vice President of office marathon club.

Community: I volunteer weekly for MADD. My parents died in a car crash from a drunk driver (discuss in my essays with my volunteer experience)

Post MBA: Work in biz dev for a tech company (current company has given me offer if I return after school, but will likely go somewhere else)

Other: the two supervisors I asked for recs went to Kellogg and Wharton and said they would write me great ones. Hopefully means they'll be good

Since I did two college sports, work with many cross functional teams, and do community service I'm hoping my team commitment fits with Team Fuqua (which is why I want to go Fuqua!)

Hey dude,
Good to hear from you!
A few things:
1. how did your GMAT retake go?
:)
That can change things

2. You need to rethink your way of presenting yourself. All of your "Achievements" you listed are 100% irrelevant for B-school. You need to be looking at LEADERSHIP achievements, business achievements, management achievements, creativity achievements, etc. Your coding life is OVER! Now, welcome to the MBA! :)

3. I’d love to help you out but without more info it’s gonna be hard. What do you do? How quickly have you advanced? Do you have any leadership? What are your great achievements? Do you have notable community service or extra curriculars?

ll of these will play important roles in your evaluation.
Best,
Jon

Age: 27, South Asian, American

Undergrad: Top 10 Public School (Top 5 Undergraduate Business Program)

GPA: 3.65

Work:
-2 Years as a Financial Analyst in a Healthcare commericial/corporate banking group at one of the 4 largest commercial banks in the US. Performed financial analysis of investment grade healthcare systems and developed a strong understanding of the provider space
-3 Years as a Management Consultant for a small healthcare consulting firm (which has sent two employees to Kellogg in the past 2 years, so the company name shouldn't be too unknown). I worked on projects with national healthcare medicaid managed care organizations over 6-7 states so I gained a lot of experience on the payer space and experience with the medicaid/medicare space in a multiple number of states. I got promoted within a year to a level above Analyst and am likely up for promotion to manager role this fall. I've gained experience leading my own workstreams and my recommenders (Partner, Senior Manager) can speak to my leadership ability and my client interactions very well.

Other:
-In college, volunteered abroad as an HIV/AIDs educator for a summer
-Currently involved in a few volunteering organizations but about to start a mentorship program this fall

GMAT (this is where it gets tough)
-680 (low quant). I'm re-taking the GMAT in a few weeks to break 700-720, but if all else fails, I'm going to try and give the GRE a shot.

Goals for MBA:

-Healthcare. I'm passionate about the industry and I don't want to change industries. I want to leverage my experience in both the finance/provider and management consulting/payer space and move towards a healthcare technology focused start-up or even working within a healthcare provider in a management role. With that said, I'm targeting schools with strong placements/programs within healthcare (Kellogg, Fuqua, etc)

Any advice, tips, chances? Is this a reach (I figure my gmat def needs to go up to have a shot at all)

Well dude, as you might guess a lot will depend upon that GMAT. If you can (or have) bring it up to a 720, well things are looking mighty awesome....
:)

Otherwise, though even with your current score, I would say you have a shot. You're American, with a great GPA from a very good school. You come from a top industry that does good recruiting at Duke (and you're a good fit too), you have some really nice volunteer work... So lots of very nice narrative stuff in your profile, which i super important.

If you have that GMAT score above average to boot... well then... :)

What I can also say is that if you push really hard to get to know Duke well - visiting, talking to people, building your network before you apply it can have a BIG effect on your application, so I would totally urge you doing that.

I hope this helps! And feel free to drop us a line for a more full-on Free Consultation: https://bit.ly/mbafcGC

Hey man,
So first of all wicked GMAT! Well done!
If there's one thing that will PROVE you have change r.e. your GPA, that was the thing to do. And you did it. so congrats.

Next a question: Your goals: why healthcare? What's the motivation? You don't seem to have worked in it. So why?
And a critique: You've done audit and finance on deals. But what makes you want to do IB? Right now about your IB and then PE/VC goals, I am most skeptical. Why? You won't be surprised to discover that these are the first goals of just about every single applicant to B-school. No surprise here. These are the biggest money fancy finance jobs. But keep in mind that the competition is stiff and that there will be a lot of VE/PC/IB people who ALREADY have industry experience. So why you? Are these REALLY the right goals for you? And also although you COULD go to Duke, they're aren't necessarily famous for this stuff, so you might have a touch of an uphill battle convincing the school you REALLY really just wanna go there.

Other than that, things looks pretty good. You have decent ECs and volunteer work, and everything else looks mighty solid.

I hope this helps!

Hey dude,
Good to hear from you. I think you have a solid competitive shot at Fuqua. You're a fit with your background, and your goals are clear and logical and in line with your past experience. Very good GMAT, with the accompanying GPA from a good school. Basically everything looks in order. Maybe your ECs/Volunteer work is a bit on the light side, especially given the opportunities in your industry, but you have enough that it shouldn't pose any real problem, or be perceived as a negative.
Other than that, just go with your passion and make them an application they can't refuse. :)

As I've mentioned in this forum to other candidates, Fuqua is real keen on folks who know the school real well and love it even more. So think about visiting, networking, researching and all that jazz. It does pay off in the end.

Best,
Jon

Hey dude,
Well fantastic GMAT there! Wow!!!
Now even with this GMAT though you still do have some challenges in your application, notably that you are in Indian candidate, from a non-IIT school with a VERY low GPA. All of these things plus your non-famous employer will make Fuqua a stretch for you, but still you should give it a shot.

The important thing though will be for you to tell your STORY - to make it unique and exciting and passionate (as well of course as logical and effective) :)

And just as important is that you apply to a range of schools that fit your needs and goals (I would recommend applying to at least five)

I hope this helps!

Hi all,
Would appreciate any feedback. Thanks in advance.

• 760 GMAT
• 3.27 GPA (upward trending)
• Undergraduate degree in finance from a large public school in the Southeast US.
• First generation college student
• Work experience includes 3 years at a bulge bracket IB as operations analyst – securities processing and trade settlements. Heavy involvement and leadership in various regulatory/strategy projects. Promoted ahead of schedule to senior analyst after 2 years.
• Internships at manufacturing company in both Shanghai and Singapore (operations and market research)
• Extracurriculars: Volunteer tutoring of adult students in subjects ranging from basic literacy to GED prep two hours a week. Social fraternity leadership for 2.5 years in undergrad.
• Goal: management consulting in the financial services industry
• 25-year-old white American male

I am in line for a Leadership Development Program at work next year, which I think would strengthen my application, but my team is wrapping up a large project this month so the time might be right to go ahead and apply this year. Thoughts?

Thanks again.

Europe champion among students and MVP of this championship. Played for a professional team in one of the strongest leagues in the world.
My other work experience includes creating 2 successful cosmetics stores in Moscow (active), creating an online cosmetics store(active) and creating a store and a hair salon in one place (unique approach in that town, now sold). I am also a partner in a big (55 stores) cosmetics stores network in Moscow. Got my first salary when was 13 and since then I am working constantly.
- Extracurriculars include volleyball non-profit projects. Participated in development of the amateur volleyball league. Gave volleyball lessons to kids and orphants.
- Goal: Creative marketing position in fashion & beauty industry.
- Speak 3 languages apart from my native Russian
- Hobby - Fashion photography. Just returned from Hong Kong where we were shooting models outdoors.

My main weakness is my very low GPA. It is as low as 2.44 (but I will check it once more. I pray for a calculating mistake). At the time I studied in university I was playing for the club and for the national team. I chose engineering while my sports colleagues all chose sports universities. And I also had some issues preventing me from getting top marks. However I worked hard on my diploma project and was awarded a prize as my project got into TOP100 diplomas that year. Will definitely write an optional essay for that.

Hi all,
Would appreciate any feedback.

From a pure stats perspective, your 760 GMAT will offset concerns on the lower GPA. Focus on painting a clear pictures of what you want to do post-MBA from your prior experiences. MC for financial services makes a lot of sense given your current WE. You need to convince Fuqua why you want to transition to MC. The internship in manufacturing in Asia is not relevant, you should remove that aspect from your application. If you want to mention the future LDP aspect, be sure to tie it into the application is a tasteful way.
