Hey Folks!
Great to be amongst you, thanks to GMAT Club
I am a college senior in India, graduating in May 2015 and eyeing Fall 2015 intake of early career MBA/MS Management options at places like ISB-YLP, IESE-YTP, LBS,LSE,ESADE,HEC,GGSB etc…. (whichever suits better for me??) Here is my profile:
I am currently studying at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research at Calcutta (Kolkata) and am pursuing a 5 year Integrated MS in Biology. My current GPA is 8.92/10 , which converts to 3.89/4.0 in US scale and I am currently the topper of the department. I did my schooling from CBSE board and secured 89.4% in 10th and 92 % in 12th (with 94.25% in Science subjects).
While at school, I was also an avid painter and won several regional and national prizes and also hold a diploma in painting with distinction. I have also been awarded "Student of the Year" when I was in Class 8th . I graduated as School topper in 12th and also securing 6th rank in the state.
After 12th, I was selected for the Prestigious KVPY Fellowship provided by Govt. of India to about 200-250 students for pursuing higher studies in Basic Sciences. I was selected after a rigorous selection process of a written test and a personal Interview in front of top scientists of the country. Alongside that, I was among top 1% students in regional Biology Olympiads and also secured a 99%ile in All India Premedical Test and 100%ile in State Joint Entrance Exam
I then joined IISER, which is one of the best science institutes in India for scientific research, under the KVPY scholarship from GoI, and doing a fully funded Masters degree here.. For the first two years, I studied all pillars of science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Statistics, Geology, Computer Science, Biology. I chose Biology as a major as it was a natural interest for me.
In 2011, I was selected in 29 membered Indian National team at the 5th Asian Science Camp at South Korea. There I led a 5 membered international group and presented a poster in front of distinguished Nobel Laureates.
Even within 3 years of study, i have completed 3 internships in each of my summer vacations. In the summer of 2010 and 2011, I worked at the Center of Excellence in Epigenetics Lab Pune, India, where I worked on cell adhesion mechanisms. I also found out important novel characteristics in a few important genes which are crucial for cancer development and exploring new pathways of gene regulation in mammalian cells.
In 2013, I got a visiting studentship at the Department of Molecular Genetics at Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel to carry out a research Internship. The Weizmann institute is one of the top 100 universities in the world and one of the best life science departments in Asia. There I worked in an team of people of different nationalities, on exploring basic cellular processes using high end devices and ended up with very interesting results which is soon going to be a part of Journal publication.I also made new strains of yeast which are used as lab stock and also helped them to set up a tissue culture facility. Hopefully, I'll also have another international internship next summer (2014.)
During college, I actively participated in the inaugural fest "Inquivesta " (which is the largest science fest of India) in 2011 and also in 2012. In 2011, I worked in smaller roles of sponsorship and designing team and then in 2012, i worked in bigger roles of branding, merchandise marketing and sponsorship team and was instrumental to get a funding of about 50,000 INR. Also, I handled merchandise sales of amount 1 lakh INR, almost single handedly!
I have been associated with an NGO as a volunteer and also tried to assemble a chapter at IISER Kolkata in 2013. The initial responses were very good and about 35 people joined the team (can a symbolic of leadership skills??).
Co-organized zonal B-Plan and entrepreneurship workshop at IISER Kolkata ( a science university !!) for the first time and saw good turnout
I am also a member of the placement committee of the recruitment cell at IISER Kolkata and also a member of the academic outreach committee meant to popularize IISER among general masses.
Finally, a take on why need a management degree? Working in professional research environment, I realized that the standards of scientific research in India is not as good as in the west. However, the scenario is changing and Government is investing huge money for scientific development. To make the life of scientist better, I want to work for an organization, which strives to manufacture high quality research material like proteins, enzymes and antibodies in India itself and makes them valuable to the scientists faster and at a cheaper rate. Atleast, that is one of the differences that I have seen in developed countries and India. I also believe that my background in basic biology and prior research experience make a good candidate for that. I believe, that I have imbibed correct research aptitude to analyze the problems and then tackle them correctly.
Thanks for reading, and kindly evaluate my profile for ISB YLP, and would also be great if you recommend some other MIM programs that would suit my profile. I am planning to take my GMAT in Jan and am hopeful for about 700 score.
Warm Regards!
