Hi,

I've planned to apply for ISB in the first round of 2019.

Undergrad- B. tech from Tier 2 college with a CGPA of 7.6.

Work Ex- 32 months with IFB in service operations as well as business development for additives category.
Designation- Area Manager
My work primarily revolved around handling service operations of a given territory in Bangalore. Apart from the operations aspect, I was responsible for driving the service business in particular categories and maintain the required targets month on month. I do have some quantifiable achievements to be presented through my work experience.
A small caveat though, I've recently resigned from my job to prepare for CAT as well as GMAT.

Extra curricular- Participation in Marketing events for literary event in college.
Head of the engine and transmission department for fabrication of vehicle in Formula Student competition .

There are few missing information that would help evaluate better..points such as your 10,12 score.

With 32 months of work experience and operations background, you need to bring out strong aspects in your profile such as direct contribution to growth in revenue/business over a period in your area. You need to mention quantifiable numbers, including crucial KPIs that indicate your performance and gives a glimpse about your work and you.

Since you have left your job, you might have to explain later as to why you took this decision because majority of candidates prepare for CAT, GMAT while doing their job full-time.

Extra curricular activities are few in number. Please note that ISB application gives a lot of scope to display your extra curricular activities. Do reach out for any additional queries/help.

All the best !

Hi Shweta,

Thank for the response. Understanding that the profile would be difficult to evaluate from the insufficient information provided, allow me add a few more points.

Class Xth - 9CGPA,
Class XIIth-84%.

In addition to these aforementioned extra-curricular activities, I think I can mention my passion for biking as well as a few more small hobbies.
The decision to leave my job was out of necessity for the career transition.

Please let me know if this weakens or strengthens my prospects any further.

Thanks.

Work experience - 3 and a half years as a software developer. Currently working at Cognizant as a Programmer analyst. Previously worked with Bentley Systems and Caterpillar inc.

Developed crucial features for the product I was working on. Worked with colleagues of different nationalities namely Americans ,English, Polish , Chinese , Canadians etc. I was the go to man for team presentations, have given presentations in front of senior vps. Hi,
Coming from the most competitive pool of applicants, your biggest challenge will be to differentiate yourself from others with similar profiles. Work experience is an important criterion for evaluation and the adcom would definitely seek some qualities that make you stand apart: your leadership skills, accelerated career progression, and the level of impact you have made on your 3 organizations. If you think another year's experience will allow you to build these, given that you have moved around a bit, then i'd suggest you do that.
You seem to be consistently involved in extracurriculars, which is a good thing.
You already know about the GMAT so I will only add: score 730+ and all the best.

Hi there,

The GMAT score is never alone a reason for an admission decision (unless you have a 760+, then possibly), but even then, having a high GMAT score helps. Aim for your best, a score above the class average of ~710 will be preferable.
The other criteria for MBA admission are- the quality of your work experience, your leadership skills, and your extra-curriculars.
In terms of work experience, you should be able to demonstrate promotion(s), your achievements and their impact on our organization, and your leadership skills. Leading big, $$$$ projects should give you opportunities to demonstrate these. Moreover, in an operations role, one typically gets a chance to work with all levels and functions of people - which will help you come up with apt examples to show your leadership skills.

Your CSR activity seems to be relevant. Needless to say, the level of your involvement and the achievements made are going to be important.

Your goals sound concerning. It will be difficult to justify why you wish to work in media. While the industry may attract you or you may find it fascinating, this alone would not be reason to shift, if you haven't already got some experience there. Be sure to get this aspect of your story right or it can cause havoc. Feel free to reach out should you need help.

In terms of profile improvement, you have your task laid out before you. with a few months to go before the deadline, focus on cracking the GMAT.

Hi Ved22

Your profile has some good spikes that can make it appealing to the adcom. Academically you have done well. Extracurriculars are great too. Work experience has its stand-out elements as well.

All in all, you have a good shot at ISB. You haven't mentioned your goals, so we recommend that you put a bit of research into planning both short term and long term vision. A great application with essays that highlight your strengths and clearly articulate why you would be an asset to the class of 2021 would take you across the finish line.

Feel free to reach out for a detailed discussion.

Hi shobhitkh

There are two aspects that you must focus upon. Firstly the GMAT - a GMAT of 650 will pull you down and you need to ensure that you hit at least a 700+. Secondly, since you would be competing with peers with a similar background, it would be important to clearly articulate why you wish to do an MBA and why is it linked to your journey and goals.

Extracurriculars are great and if you focus on nailing the points above, you have a good shot at ISB.

Feel free to reach out for a detailed discussion.

Hi Ved

We don't see years of work experience mentioned anywhere?

You have got a good GMAT score that is above ISB average, good academic credentials (your performance during engineering) and I believe you would be able to bring strong stories through your Reliance Jio experience. We also like the diversity of your extra-curriculars. Overall, it is a good profile. You would have to take care of two aspects:

1) As a software integration architect, how would you differentiate yourself from other IT/Soft Testing/Tech Architect candidates? You would also need to connect your experience with impact on company's revenues like you mentioned.

2) Assuming the work ex is below the average, you would really need to bring out elements of maturity, team work and collaboration and also components from your experience that explain how you would want to progress in your career in the short-term and long-term.

All the best.

Hi Shobhit,

I believe you would be able to bring out insightful essays story about your experience at Credit Suisse/ Ultra-tech. You should really spend a good amount of time on your essays. First describing how you would differentiate yourself from rest of the class and also add value to the cohort. You should also build on top of what you have achieved and plan you short term and long-term to show clarity of you decision to join ISB.

However, none of the above will make a lot of sense unless you work on your GMAT score. 650 in mocks is not really encouraging and you need to target 700+. Not saying that with a <700 , you cant make it. Well you may, but since you have some time, work on that score first. All the best.

Hello,

Greetings for the day!

I am a commerce student and graduated in BCOM 2015.
I have close to 4 years of experience majority in advertising/marketing, however, I do hold 1 year of experience in admin profile too.

12th - 61%
10th - 82%

Extra Curricular-
I hold a diploma in fitness sciences. My interest in fitness has made me a licensed Zumba instructor. I have been working with a local NGO for the past 1 year.
I also am a painter and conduct painting session for kids. I got an opportunity to freelance in Social Media and handle a few known local brands.

I am 26 years old and plan to write GMAT on September 19.

I am targeting ISB and IIM B.

Can someone help me understand what min GMAT score I should be aiming at for these colleges with this profile?

Thanking in advance.

Hi Ruddhi,

Thanks for the shout out.
Although ISB has a huge class size, competition is still never-ending and intense and in this scenario, every bit of "extra" helps. So aim for a 700+ GMAT score, preferably above a 720. The class size is much smaller at IIMB, but the big GMAT score will still help there.
Being from an advertising/ marketing background (I have the same background :)), you'd be expected to have good communication skills. I am going to recommend that you do really well in the quant section of GMAT to show your quantitative skills, which are a big evaluation criterion at business schools as they have quant-focussed subjects.
Also, if you are giving your GMAT is September, my guess is you will apply to both IIM B and ISB in the second round deadline. That should be okay.

Hi Ruddhi

You have got a unique profile (combination of Advertising/marketing plus and your diploma in fitness). I see a lot of diversity in your
experience and if we channel it well in the essays, it can really make your profile standout. However, you need to ensue that you have a 700+ score to get that all important interview invite.
