Re: ISB Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hello goalgmat2019

Past scores are decent, work experience is your standout strength, the achievements look worth talking about, brands on the CV give credibility and the 0 to 1 experience will be invaluable in the essays.
Some of the extracurricular are B-School favorites (such as Toastmasters) and can make for some interesting stories.
A GMAT above 700 will put you in a very strong position. In an ideal world, R1 should be preference and with 6 years of work ex it will not be too late for ISB or IIM A/B/C. Management consulting is always a tricky goal to portray irrespective of the years of experience.
My advice would be to focus only on the GMAT and take any decision only after getting a score that fits your otherwise strong credentials. Don't derail the GMAT prep by getting confused about how and when to apply. R1 is actually just 7-8 months away only.

I plan to apply for ISB Round 3. Request for a profile evaluation please, and chances considering I want to apply in Round 3:

Age
26 (Male)

GMAT
Yet to take

Education
B.Sc (H) from St. Xavier's College (GPA - 7.4/10)
Class XII (ISC) - 89%
Class X (ICSE) - 89.4%

Work Experience
Generalist with 5 years cross-functional experience in client-handling, strategy, operations, product, and analytics across different sectors.

•Program Manager (International Expansion), CEO's Office at a leading Edtech startup (6 months - currently working)
Building the 0 to 1 journey as part of CEO’s Office in the US market by managing an 18-member cross-functional team and owning various workstreams such as Sales Ops, Performance Marketing, Capacity Building, and Strategic/Product Initiatives increasing the L2E to ~9% from ~5%.
Soon to be promoted (Associate Director) based on performance.

•Political Consultant (1 year)
Worked as a Consultant for the State Assembly Elections (selectivity rate <3%) which comprises a Client-facing role consulting and working closely with one of India’s biggest political parties (national and state-level politicians and bureaucrats), designing campaign strategies, preparing and operationalizing strategic long-term election plans, and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data, impacting 50 million voters.
Top 5% of the employees in the entire organization with ‘Exceed Expectations’ performance rating.

•Deputy Manager, CarDekho (2 years)
Client-facing role which involved suggesting business strategies to the Client, analytically synthesizing data to create performance and funnel reports for identifying bottlenecks, single-handedly managing the entire process design-operations-tech-product teams for various top two and four-wheeler manufacturers in India.
Top 10% of the employees to be promoted during the COVID-19 pandemic with an ‘Exceeded Expectations’ performance rating; was also a recipient of the ‘RockStart Rookie’ award.

•Associate, ZS Associates (~2 years)
Handled independent work-streams which involved calculating the Incentive Compensation, Goal Setting, targeting, and segmentation, along with rigorous reporting for US pharmaceutical clients using analytical tools.

Positions of Responsibility
• Vice President-Elect at Gurgaon Orators Toastmasters Club for two consecutive terms
• Founding Member at Entrepreneurship Development Cell, St. Xavier’s College (right now its the most sought after society in college)
• Organiser of several events in college and school with a total footfall of 0.2 million
• Elected Vice President, Leadership Training Service (LTS) at school

Extra-Curricular Activities
• Selected as an Impact Scholar at Global Governance Initiative (selectivity rate <5%)
• Delegate for the Public Policy Program by Vision India Foundation (selectivity rate <10%)
• Avid Toastmaster winning numerous awards at club and area-level; mentor at Gurgaon Orators Toastmasters Club
• Selected for the 2nd Chinese Student Exchange Program between St. Xavier’s Collegiate School, Kolkata and Shida Fuzhong High School, Yunnan, China on the basis of merit and interview (This exchange program was the first of its kind in India)

Projects
• Studying and Defining the ‘Press Freedom Index of India’ under Shri Atul Kumar Tiwari, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Govt. of India. Also working on getting this published.

Social Work
• Volunteer at various events at a leading NGO
• Engaged in fundraising, plantation, and awareness activities at an NGO a long time back

Post-MBA Goals
Short term - Strategy Consulting (Although I have worked as a generalist throughout my function has always been consulting and working on strategic projects is what I enjoy the most)
Long term - Either I want to start something of my own in equating education access to students from disadvantaged backgrounds/or in the social impact space concerning governance and upliftment of education

Concerns
1. My working hours are very taxing and also include work during weekends. Keeping that in mind I may end up getting a below-average GMAT score before the R3 deadline. Should I try for this year or R1 next year? If I am not able to take admission this year and join next year, my work ex will be above 6 years (with a leadership role and good growth), hence will I be an outlier in terms of cracking MBB/placements in general/peer learning/age?
2. Is ISB the right place for my goals? Also, which top MBA schools abroad are within my reach (provided I get a decent GMAT score)?
3. Any suggestions/areas of improvement on my overall candidature.

Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, please evaluate my profile!

Age: 22F, 24-25 at the time of applying

GMAT - in the range of 710-730, considering giving the GRE instead since its easier for me?

Undergrad Information - private uni in Mumbai. CGPA: 3.1/4, dual degree program with MBA in Tech Management and BTech in IT. MBA specialisation in finance and minor in business analytics.
12th - 74.6% (HSC)
10th - 85.6% (ICSE)

Work experience and leadership: 2 months web dev in digital payments, 4 months data analytics at a national digital payment solutions provider, 2 years of WE as a cybersecurity consultant at one of the Big4s, hope to make it to asst manager before I apply to Isb

Community and others: 60+ MUNs participated as a delegate, delegation lead, executive board member and organized. 5+ leadership roles at MUN organization in and outside of college. Projects include financial analysis and valuation of US retailer, comparative analysis of options pricing methods and technical indicator analysis. Proficient in Python, SQL, Excel, Tableau and PowerBI. Have certifications such as Google Data Analytics, Wharton Business Analytics, ISB Financial Markets, CFA Investments Foundation, considering giving the L1 too!

Post MBA goals: move into corporate finance at big tech (think FAANG) or IB, my backup is strategy consulting at MBB depending on if I like the consulting lifestyle. I want to ultimately make CFO/partner.

Why another MBA? - my current one is specialised and played to what I loved the most (Tech) and due to COVID, I could not derive the full value of my MBA (ala networking/case comps), another MBA gives me the opportunity to pivot to finance/strat consulting, I have corporate exposure to back up my career interest as opposed to going in doe-eyed into the job I am now.

What do you think? Is there anyway in which I can build my profile further?

Academics, Work ex, GMAT, ECs, Essays, LORs. It's a combination of all these unless I'm missing something. How impactful are you is the question? This is how your application will get shortlisted.

I'm an applicant myself but check in with some consultants for a profile review.

Identify your weak points and compensate with a strong GMAT, LOR and essays.

Attend the infosessions and also try to understand if applying in the R3 is beneficial or not compared to applying in R1 in a few months.

Hi,

Your chances of admission are dependant on how you differentiate yourself from other applicants. From this perspective, it will be nice to understand what you specifically bring to the table. Your current description is too elementary for a profile evaluation. Tell what are your work and ECA achievements, what are your career goals? why do you think you need an MBA now.

Getting 640 in the mock and getting 700 plus in actual exam are 2 different things. Unless you have a final score, all predictions will be not accurate.
And 30th jan is not 2nd cycle. It is the last round for this year's admission and the seat in this round are less compared to earlier one's.
So its better to focus on your gmat and then look into the application process. Writing an application will atleast take 2 weeks if you are a working person.

The problem is I want to give a shot at this 'Cycle3'(sorry my bad) and then do a better application in the next year's application process
Also I understand your point on scoring in mock vs actual exam.

Is there a data for ISB to see the seats that are vacant for cycle3?

Hi lowkeyanon,

Here is my evaluation of your profile

GMAT: Current score of 640 is definitely not competitive as far as ISB R3 (Yes. It will be R3 deadline on 31st Jan and NOT R2) is concerned. A score in excess of 680 is a must for you to have a realistic shot.

Academics: Average; You should bring across leadership experiences as a Captain of a tech team – how did you overcome challenges and how did you rally the members towards achieving something.

Work Experience: Above Average; This is by far the most impressive aspect of your profile. A mix of corporate experience and family business – both in similar fields can be churned into a good story. You will need to showcase how you got exposed to multiple problem statements working in consulting, and how you applied some of those problem-solving skillsets to make a meaningful impact on the family business. Since a lot of experience is in and around operations and SC, your post-MBA goals should be aligned with the field in all practical purposes.

Extracurriculars: Below Average; You will need to do more retrospection and come up with something more impactful as far as ECs are concerned.
To conclude, a 680+ GMAT score and an application that explicitly brings out your USPs while indicating how you will add value to the cohort at ISB will help you gain the eyeballs of the adcom and give you an interview shortlist.

I am an ISB alum, CO15, and have been guiding applicants to get into ISB and other global schools for more than 5 years now. Please feel free to reach out at arijit.biswas@crackadmission.com/+91-9701215544 in case you seek personalized guidance to ace the application.

Cheers and Best of Luck

Hello goalgmat2019,

Hope this finds you well.

There is definitely a lot working for you in so far as your work experience is concerned. However, GMAT is an important component as well and you must definitely look at exceeding a 710 for ISB.

At this point, all you need to focus on is your GMAT. Do not worry about the other aspects of your profile. :-)

All the best!

You must definitely look at a score upwards of 710. As of now, that should be your primary point of focus.

The rest would, of course, depend on the career goals you put forth (and how well you articulate the same as well as your strengths in your essays) and you have not put in any details pertaining to the same.

All the best!
