I will apply to B-schools during R1 in 2020. I will begin B-school in the fall of 2021 as a member of the class of 2023. I say that to make it clear that I have some time to work on my profile. My below profile details the work experience I will have when I apply.

Male, white, 29 years old.

GMAT: 690 unofficial. 45Q 40V IR 7 on 13 January 2017

GPA: 3.82 at United States Military Academy at West Point. B.S. in Economics with Honors.

Work Experience:
7 years in the United States Army. Served as an Infantry Officer.

Graduate of U.S. Army Ranger and Airborne School.

3 years assigned to an airborne brigade in Vicenza, Italy. During that time I serve as a Platoon Leader (Manager) leading 40 Soldiers, Company Executive Officer (Deputy Senior Manager) and Battalion Logistics Officer (managed/coordinated logistical requirements for 800 man unit across multiple international borders).

Currently assigned to University of New Hampshire where I serve as an Assistant Professor of Military Science. I train prospective Army Officers in leadership and military tactics.

Goals post MBA:
Looking to obtain a role as an operations or management consultant. My story goes something like: I had an education by experience on the fundamentals of leadership in the Army. I need the experience and education an MBA provides to give me the tools to help companies reach their maximum utilization of their systems and human capital.

Extracurriculars:
Judo assistant coach for UNH club team

My top schools in order:
Harvard
Wharton
Sloan
Kellogg
Booth

Any advice or tips are appreciated.

Thanks for getting in touch and for planning ahead! We love candidates who plan ahead.
Now my first question is...do you have two wait two more years to apply? At that point, you will have 9+ years of work experience and while military candidates have a bit more flexibility at times, you'll be coming it at roughly twice the amount of experience as the average candidate which doesn't make things easier.
Your GPA is great and programs like military candidates so please make use of all the resources available to military candidates. Reach out to the military clubs at top programs and start networking.
GMAT right now is going to be tough for the schools you are targeting. Get a private tutor and get your Quant up to 47 and try to up your verbal a bit. To apply from a position of strength, I'd like to see your overall score above the averages for the programs on your list so that means 730+. Even at the 690 level, schools like UCLA and Cornell might be tough.

Dear jm1991,

Your profile is quite good. I would recommend you to improve your GMAT score as b-schools pay close attention to it. Other than that, you could also try exploring a different industry before applying. But that is just my amateur thinking. Anyways, I wish you good luck! :-) :-) :-)

Thank you so much for the tips! I'll be sure to reach out for the consulting.

To clarify, I won't have 9+ years experience at that point. The 7 years in the military figure is the number I will when I apply in two years. I currently have 5 years experience in the military. And no I stay another two years in the military for multiple reasons, one of those being the full Post 9/11 GI bill which is about a $130k benefit towards my MBA.
